Boko Haram is an Islamic extremist group in Nigeria that has affected not only Nigeria, but also Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. They’re known for using guerilla warfare tactics, these violent attacks have caused many people to become displaced. They are well known for the kidnapping of around 200 school girls.

What is Boko Haram?
The group Boko Haram was founded in 2002 and translated loosely means, “Western education is sinful.” Their goal is to transform Nigeria into a radical Islamic state which would uphold traditional Islamist views.
Are there other groups?
There is a splinter group of Boko Haram known as Ansaru, which was formed in 2012. In their short existence they have become a dangerous group, kidnapping and killing foreigners.
Who is the leader of Boko Haram?
Boko Haram’s current leader is Abubakar Shekau who took over the organization after its last leader, Yusuf, was killed by the Nigerian army in 2009.
Are other countries affected?
Chad, Cameroon, and Niger are neighbors of Nigeria and therefore are heavily affected by Boko Haram. The four countries make up a joint military force made to combat the group.
How has Boko Haram affected people?
In northern Nigeria alone nearly 1.4 million people, mostly woman and children, have been internally displaced. Men and boys are being forced to join their army and they are abducting woman and children.
