Captain's Log

We still need representatives for CDMC, especially teachers. You will receive extra duty for your participation. Email Mrs. Helton to sign up.

Please review the Waco ISD Grading Policy found in the Alta Vista School House: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-nxOHwVaBsDAGP5JRFs3WChDyU6BNqvo

Don't forget preparations for our campus visit on September 10 by special guests and new teachers. Hallway bulletin boards should be ready with student work by Friday, September 6. You will also need to assign a "greeter" for each period that will greet guests and share with them the objective/focus for the lesson.

Conscious Discipline & CHAMPS

Our focus for the month of September in Morning Meetings will be RESPECT. Lesson plans are here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CKGLd2hn8dPg2xRt1t3awHEEbzsZ7uApYstsxw2me1w/edit?usp=sharing

Required activities for the month are the cards for troops on September 11, and starting our year-long kindness challenge on September 16 (with Kindness "Tree").

All things related to behavior, including CHAMPS templates and our behavior management plan can be found in the "Behavior" folder on the Alta Vista School House in Google Drive.

Tribal News

YOU can award points to a tribe for things that you observe and want to positively reinforce, especially when they are following our school agreements (Safe, Respectful, Responsible, Ready to Teach & Learn).

To enter points, fill out this short form: https://forms.gle/kZS51dT5dskoJ8bC9

Other ways that tribes can earn points: cafeteria behavior, specials behavior, perfect attendance (weekly and six weeks), pop-up games, receiving Anchored in Excellence Notes, sending Ms. Koenig pictures to post on Facebook, letting Ms. Koenig know when you post to your classroom FB page (if you have one), Box Tops (check out the new app-just email Ms. Koenig with how many you enter), and more! Each grade level can select a way for students to earn tribe points academically, like mastering sight words or facts or academic growth.

Our first TRIBE BUDDY DAY will be on Friday, September 13. You will pair up with another class from your tribe. We will be celebrating National Comic Book Day, so you and students can wear your favorite comic book character tshirt.

Our student data wall is LIVE. You can find it here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KZ3FrpNtpMtkxmMjtdmObRrkkjK-KtDn2quno_nDkkE/edit?usp=sharing

You can add it to your Google Drive.

Attendance

NEW PROCEDURE: By 8:15 each morning, complete a paper roll so that the office can start calling families to check on absent students. Our goal for the state, district and Transformation Zone is 97%. Last year we were at 96.10 which was a small improvement over the past year, but we can do much better. If you begin noticing a trend with certain students being chronically absent, please let me know so that we can check to see what is going on and see what assistance is needed. Just a reminder that a lot of absences in elementary are not the students fault so we do not want the kids to feel bad. We want them to know they were missed and welcome them back. The best thing we can is create an environment that students want to be at school. I believe we are doing that and have had many great conversations especially with new families to our school about how happy their children are at Alta Vista. Keep up the good work.

Math Fact Fluency

We kick off our math fact fluency initiative on Tuesday, September 3. Make sure you send home parent letters to all students (K-5).

Students in grades 3-5 will not have an assessment for September because it's a review of addition facts, but grades 1-2 will have an oral assessment at the end of the month.
