Cedar Grove Friday Flash
April 24, 2020
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
We hope you are doing well and have had a good week.
As you know, our Kindergarten Orientation was canceled for the time being due to school closings; however, we are still registering students for next year. If you have a child who will turn five years old on or before September 1, 2020, he or she is eligible to enroll in kindergarten for the coming school year. If you have already completed all the required paperwork, you do not need to do anything further. If you have not registered your child yet, please note that MCPS has launched an online registration/enrollment process to support families who wish to enroll their child. This new process is for registration for next year's kindergarten class, as well as current transfers within MCPS. Families may start the registration process using the following link: https://bit.ly/MCPS_Registration_Survey. If you know of any friends or family members who have a rising kindergarten student, please share this information. Please email Mrs. Fair if you have any questions at Noreen_K_Fair@mcpsmd.org. Thank you!

From Mrs. Spoales, School Counselor
Hi Families,
Please check out this handout! I found it very useful with ideas about how to handle stress in this very difficult time. We are all struggling in our own way and it can be difficult to help our children when we aren't able to handle our own feelings. There are ideas for family activities- my favorite is creating a family "worry jar." Openly communicating with children can help them process their own feelings and is very important.Parents can also model their own feelings and ways they are coping with them. Please reach out if you have any questions or need my assistance. My email is Erin_M_Spoales@mcpsmd.org.
Take care,
Erin Spoales

Montgomery County Family Violence Prevention and Awareness Initiative
MCPS is in partnership with the Montgomery County Family Violence Prevention and Awareness Initiative. The objectives of this organization is to raise public awareness around the identification and incidence of family violence; to provide information to individuals who may be experiencing family violence while social distancing and staying at home; to guide individuals on how to support a friend or family member who is experiencing family violence; and to identify available community resources.
The public health crisis surrounding COVID-19 has magnified the dangers to victims of abuse. Their slogan for this initiative is “Do You Feel Unsafe at Home? Are you concerned about a neighbor or loved one? Free Help Is Available.” Additional information and resources may be found either by clicking on this link below in English or Spanish.
Free Childcare for Essential Workers!
From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Our Media Specialist
Hello everyone! I hope this finds you well as we are moving into our 20th day of distance learning! Here is the April Media Monthly! Please bookmark and visit this page often. I will be updating it as media activities are posted in The Virtual Media Center in MyMCPS Classroom! Your students should see the tile on their dashboard. These are what I call My-Choice media activities, created for each grade level and are completely optional! In addition, the Virtual Media Center is loaded with online resources -- everything from eBooks and Read-Alouds to Informational databases. And, for our students who are logging into an MCPS Chromebook with their MCPS Google accounts, here is the slide show with the Morning News Blast embedded so they can see the morning news (and our special guest videos!). I miss all of your children so much, and I hope that you are all seizing the moments as we experience this historical event together.
From Mr. Jansson, Our PE Teacher
Hi Friends,
PE in April is going to look a little different then usual. We will be doing lessons from home. We will be finishing up marking period 3. The PE department is working hard to get that out to us and will show us what that will look like soon. Most importantly, I want you to take care of yourselves. Wash your hands, keep at least 6 feet away from others, and cover when you sneeze or cough. If you can get outside, do so as long as you keep away from others. Fresh air and the sun will make you feel better.
In April we celebrate National Parks week. If you have a chance, explore some national parks online. There are many cool web sites.
This is all new for us. There may be some obstacles, but please don't stress. Just try your best. We are in this together.
Take care and be healthy!
