Principal's Message

Tēnā koutou katoa – Warmest greetings to you all.

Last week we held our PTA Treat Day and what a wonderful day the children had with thanks to our AMAZING team of PTA ladies!

The children dressed up in Christmas themed mufti. After a yummy lunch, they had fun at the dance party and on the obstacle course. Along the way they met up with Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Finally Santa arrived in the Fonterra Milk Tanker and he brought along with him some treats. Thank you so much to our wonderful PTA helpers. We are so privileged to have such a supportive PTA for our school community. The children and staff all had a wonderful time. We hope that our PTA ladies had fun too!!

I hope you managed to see the photos that were shared on our Normanby School Facebook Page. Please check them out.

We are starting to look at classes for 2021. A lot of time and effort is put into ensuring we put children in the class that will best fit their needs. If you have specific information that you need to share regarding classes for 2021 please contact me asap. Once we make up the classes, as you can imagine, one change can have a ripple effect or upset the balance, therefore if we have a chat in advance, it alleviates this issue that can happen at a later date. Feel free to email me at principal@normanby.school.nz. I can call you or meet with you - whatever is the easiest for you.

We are currently going through the process of interviewing and appointing staff for 2021. Once these appointments are confirmed, I will share with you the staffing structure. We are planning to increase Puanga Hub to four classrooms in 2021 - this will mean we will have eight classrooms to allow for lower class numbers. The BOT have supported this decision as we all see the value in having less children in classes which ultimately provides more teacher time for each child.

This Friday 20 November, we have our Teacher Only Day. Staff will be working on Hero learning posts as well as taking part in Positive Behaviour For Learning (PB4L) Professional Development.

As I said in previous newsletters, this year we have been working really hard as a team to improve the quality of writing across our school. We have worked with a facilitator to ensure we are targeting specific children and their ability to write purposeful pieces of writing which can be enjoyed by their audience.

Please keep encouraging your child to practise their writing skills at home. This could be in the form of a letter, postcard or email to a friend or family member.

You can also help your child by supporting them and being excited by their learning.

In each newsletter over this term I will give you some ideas that can be used at home according to the age and / or stage of your child. Over the last few weeks I have given you some ideas for young children in Years 0 to 3. Today we have some tips for children in Year 4. But of course these ideas can be used for any age and stage.

Year 4

Make writing fun

  • Write about their heroes, sports events, tīpuna (ancestors), hobbies and interests. This helps your child to stay interested in what they are writing about.
  • Help your child to leave messages in sand on the beach, send a message in a bottle, do code crackers, word puzzles, crosswords, word finds – these are all fun to do together.
  • Make up a story or think of a pakiwaitara (legend) and act it out with costumes and music. Write down the names of the characters or tīpuna (ancestors).
  • If you or someone in your family has a computer, encourage your child to use it to write, email and publish or print for pleasure (emails, birthday cards, poems, jokes, letters, pictures with captions). Or you could use a computer at the library.
  • Keep writing fun and use any excuse you can think of to encourage your child to write about anything, any time.

Talk about their writing

  • Get your child to talk about their writing and share it.
  • Cut out words and letters to make stories, codes, poems, puzzles and more…
  • Play word games together.
  • Play with words. Thinking of interesting words and discussing new ones can help increase the words your child uses when they write – look words up in the dictionary or on the Internet or talk with family/whānau to find out more about where the words come from.
  • Talk about what your child writes. Be interested. If you don't understand what their story is about, ask them to tell you more about it. Use questions they will want to answer.

Give them reasons to write

  • Get your child to help write the shopping list, invitation lists for family events, menus for special dinners, thank-you cards when someone does something nice.
  • Postcards are a good size for a sentence or two and they are cheap to post, too. Have a special place to keep your child’s writing at home (notice board, fridge, folder). You might frame a piece of writing and hang it up, too.
  • Be a great role model. Show your child that you write for all sorts of reasons. let them see you enjoying writing. Write to them sometimes, too.

With only four weeks left of our school year, we have lots of end of year events coming up. Please read the newsletter and note down some of these dates in your calendar.

All the best for the remainder of this week and wishing you an awesome weekend ahead.
