2014 Executive Committee Election

Please take a moment and assist Alvamar in selecting three new Executive Board Members for 2014. We have five fantastic candidates for three openings. This is our first year using an electronic ballot. We will continue to mail hard-copy ballots and have them available throughout the Club. Please make sure to include your name on your ballot. Any ballot without a name will not be counted. This election process will close on Friday, November 15th at 5pm.

Welcome to the fall season at Alvamar. I’d like to thank everyone who participated in the Oktoberfest celebration. With almost 100 members in attendance, the night was a huge success and everyone had a wonderful evening.

There are several upcoming events at Alvamar; Thanksgiving Day Buffet, Santa Brunch, New Year’s Eve Celebration. Member events are extremely important to the Food and Beverage Department. The staff tries particularly hard to ensure that every member event runs smoothly and is a success. As members you can help in that process. It’s helpful for the Food & Beverage department know how many guests are attending each event. Our members assist us greatly by making reservations and including the name and number of other members or guest in your party. While I am always happy to see members join us for events, walk-ins do create a challenge with our larger dining events such as holiday brunches. The new electronic newsletter will make booking reservations easier than ever. Located with each event advertisement will be a link to an email address where your reservation can be sent. Your commitment and participation is greatly appreciated and together we can continue to enjoy many events in the future.

Bounty Night is held every Friday Night in the AlvaBar from 6:30 to 7:30pm. Every membership is included in the drawing but you must be here to claim the prize.* Get here early, these can be fun but it can be tough to find a table.

Chef's Monthly Recipe

Fall seems to have fallen rather quickly and we find ourselves looking at winter with dread and summer with longing. Remembering hot soup and grilled cheese sandwiches on a cold day is a fond memory of fall. Here is an old favorite.

Butternut Squash soup:

2 tbsp butter

1 onion diced

2 cloves garlic chopped

2 lbs butternut squash, peeled and diced

2 carrots peeled diced

13/4 cup chicken stock

2 tbsp brown sugar

2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped

¼ tsp fresh thyme chopped

3 oz whipping cream

Salt and pepper to taste

Sauté onion in butter till softened, add garlic and sweat it lightly, add Butternut, chicken stock, brown sugar, carrot and herbs. Bring to simmer, cover, cook 20 + minutes (till veg is tender), add cream, salt and pepper bring back to simmer then off the fire. Puree in blender or food processor, run through a sieve if preferred, if not simply Enjoy!
