RMS Weekly Event Calendar
January 21 - January 25
What's going on at RMS?
As we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. this week, it is a great opportunity to reflect on his thoughts, ideas, and leadership. The quote above is a very powerful statement about his beliefs about education and I couldn't agree more. The purpose of education is more than just disseminating knowledge. The real goal of education is for students to be able to take that knowledge, think about what they have learned, and then do something with it. It is easy to get caught up in the process of "school" where we become givers of knowledge and information. After all, we are the experts in our content. But do we provide our students with the opportunity to think and apply what they have learned? Do we provide a learning environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and problem solving? Do we push our students to rise above a "knowledge" level where they critically think about what they are learning?
In addition, Dr. King believed that character is also a goal of education. He is not saying that it is only the responsibility of the parents to teach character to their children, but rather, he believed it was a part of the educational process. Who better to teacher character than the teachers who are with students each day? As a school, our goal is help students reach academic success and become life long learners as well as productive citizens of our society. These two go hand-in-hand. Without one, it is difficult to be successful at the other.
I encourage all of you this week to reflect on your own classroom practices and see if you are demonstrating the ideas that Dr. King believed. It just might change how you do things!
