RMS MONDAY MESSAGE
September 14, 2020
Welcome!
Welcome Rombout Middle School families to the 2020-2021 school year! We are overjoyed to be welcoming students back into our building today for the first day of school. A tremendous amount of work has gone into preparing for this day and we couldn't be more proud to have accomplished what seemed like an impossible feat at times this spring and summer. Whether you are learning with us in person or learning with us in a strictly remote fashion, we want everyone to feel apart of the school community and have patience as we navigate education from this new lens. This newsletter is sent out bi-weekly and is meant to provide students and parents with information about school happenings, important dates, school/district wide events and glimpses into our classrooms. Our students and staff do amazing work and you bet we like to show it off! Other ways to stay in the loop are to follow us on social media! Instagram: @RomboutMS + Twitter: @RomboutMS
First Day of School: September 14, 2020
Remote students and hybrid students will start school 1 hour later than normal the first week of school. Blue Hybrid Students (last names A-L) will report to school and Gold Hybrid Students (last names M-Z) and Strictly Remote Students will participate in E-Learning at home. Below is the bell schedule that applies to ALL students.
Handbooks & Google Classroom Codes
In order to help parents and students navigate the changes this school year, we developed two important resource guides. Linked below is the HYBRID STUDENT HANDBOOK & the STRICTLY REMOTE STUDENT HANDBOOK. Listed in these guides are the google classroom codes for all classes offered at RMS. It is important that strictly remote students enroll themselves into the classroom pages in order to be ready for their first class today.
Strictly Remote Orientation: Meet the Teacher!
We will hold an orientation for strictly remote learners on Wednesday, September 23, 2020. This orientation is not traditional due to the fact that these students do not need to be oriented to the building. Instead, we will use this time to do a meet and greet with teachers and students will have the opportunity to see their core area teachers in person. This event will be outside under our outdoor classroom tents, we will rotate the students between tents based on their student schedule.
- 6th Grade: 8:30 - 10:00AM
- 7th Grade: 10:30 - 12:00PM
- 8th Grade: 1:00 - 2:00PM

Outdoor Classrooms
We now have FOUR outdoor learning spaces at RMS! Pictured here are our tents that are a great addition to the outdoor classrooms we established in 2019. We now have 2 outdoor learning spaces in our courtyard and two near our soccer field.
Vegetable Garden
The RMS Environmental Club worked hard to bring our vegetable garden dreams to life! The club advisors, Ms. Malin & Ms. Benson cared for this garden all summer to ensure that we had vegetables to harvest in the fall. Garden education will be infused into our curriculum at all levels and students who are interested in helping in the garden are encouraged to join the club.
This vegetable garden would not be possible without the help and support of the following people/groups: Dr. Landahl + District Administration; Anthony D'Amato + BCSD Facilities; Sember Weinman + Common Ground Farm; Nicole Porto + Land to Lean; Karen Pagano + BCSD Food Service; Ms. Benson, Ms. Malin + the RMS Farm to School Committee. Thank you everyone!
COVID-19 Safety Measures
We have implemented many new procedures and protocols at RMS in order to keep our faculty and staff safe as we return to school. The pictures below are examples of these systems in action. For more information about the COVID-19 safety measures, refer to the district's reopening handbook. (Linked at the bottom of this newsletter)
- Masks - Must be worn by everyone in the school building.
- Cafeteria - Re-designed to allow for social distancing.
- Classrooms - Class sizes were drastically reduced
- Hallways - Staggered hall changes and moving classrooms will reduce capacity in halls.
- Plastic Screens - were installed in all offices.
- Sanitizer - Sanitizer and wipes are available throughout the building and in all classrooms.
