September 8th, 2022

Parents, welcome back to school and to the Lakeside 504/HHB World Newsletter!

My name is Ms. Miller, and I am the new 504 Coordinator. Now that the back-to-school storm is settling, the 504/HHB world is well underway as we prepare for teacher professional developments, annual renewals, and welcome new families.

  • 2022-2023 Focus: Home-school team transparently communicating and collaborating to guarantee student instructional access.
  • Annual Renewals: We will begin with the most severe medical impairments and continue through the grade levels, beginning with 12th graders. Federal Law

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal law that protects the rights of individuals with disabilities to equal opportunity in programs and activities supported by federal funds.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, is a federal civil rights law that prevents intentional or unintentional discrimination against persons with disabilities. This legislation protects the civil rights of disabled persons.

Section 504 states: “No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the US, as defined in section 706(8) of this title, shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of , or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”[42 U.S.C. § 794]

504 Highlights!

  • Section 504 is NOT designed to directly improve grades, raise test scores, or reduce homework responsibilities. Section 504 provides EQUAL ACCESS to educational programs and services.
  • Accommodations are intended to “level the playing field” and give the student an equal opportunity to participate in the general education program.
  • Accommodations DO NOT reduce grade level or course expectations.
  • The Section 504 Accommodation Plan is reviewed at least once a year.
  • A physician’s medical diagnosis should be considered as valuable information, but a medical diagnosis alone does not result in 504 eligibility.
  • Determinations of eligibility, accommodations, and services are made by the 504 Team.
  • Anyone can refer a child for evaluation under Section 504; for example, Parents/guardians or Teachers can make a 504 referral.
