Central School was recently recognized by al.com as having some of the best teachers in the state of Alabama. According to niche.com, Central was selected as #6 in the state. Niche.com takes parent and community surveys to report on schools’ performances.
The Central School Future City Team led by Kimberley VanHooser was comprised of 7th & 8th graders. The theme of designing an "Age Friendly" city was detailed in five deliverables: a virtual city design (using SimCity); a 1,500-word city essay; a scale model; a project plan, and a presentation to judges at Regional Competitions on January 13th at the US Space & Rocket Center. The team this year came in 4th place in the State and took home 2 special awards: "Best Telecommunication & Power Systems' and "Best Nightscape in a Future City".

Students invited their dads, grandfathers, uncles or a special person to attend the event. It’s a great family involvement opportunity that allows our guests a memorable moment at school with their child.

Students are reading books and adding links to their chains. Everyone is so pumped and has been encouraging the first graders to read, read, read. Teacher, volunteers, parents and older students have been reading with the students to help them meet their goal. We are so excited to watch and see them grow!

Over 100 runners braved the heavy rains and had a blast finishing the 4th Annual Hug-a-Cub 5K. After the main event, our cubs had a free Fun Run inside and everyone enjoyed a celebration in the cafeteria as awards were announced. Thanks to our PTA, sponsors, the Sparkman Senators Cross Country and Track Team and Sparkman Alumnus and Head Coach Cedric Austin, the event was a lot of fun and a huge success, despite the rain.

Legacy Elementary School is one of two schools and one university in Alabama named to the 2018 Green Ribbon Schools list by the Alabama Department of Education.
“The 2018 Green Ribbon Schools honorees are to be commended for their tremendous dedication to environmentally sustainable and innovative practices. They are leaders and important examples for all schools striving to prepare students with the 21st century skills and sustainability concepts needed in the growing global economy.” -Dr. Ed Richardson
We are very excited to be recognized for our efforts towards providing a high-quality education while promoting an environmentally friendly atmosphere that focuses on building future leaders. A team of teachers and I will be attending a celebration picnic at the State Department of Education on May 10th. Legacy has been nominated for the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Award. We will find out in April if we’ve been selected to attend an award ceremony in Washington D.C.
We attribute our success to our teachers’ and staff members’ relentless commitment to outdoor education, along with our deep-rooted community support system, including local businesses and the Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program. Thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and school!
