Mrs. Farmer's Weekly News: Monday, 2/8-Friday, 2/12

  • What a wonderful week in Mrs. Farmer's Class! The students worked with excellence in their writing and wrote wonderful essays!
  • The students wrote their first blog posts for our new blog found at:, which honors the life of Anne Frank and many other children who died during the Holocaust.
  • Now, we will compare and contrast the life of Rosa Park with the life of Anne Frank. We will discover the common thread between them. We will also learn of the unsung heroes of the Holocaust.
  • Students will read and write as we explore the themes of courage, hope, and perseverance.


Common Core Standards Covered This Week:

RL.6.1: Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

L.6.1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

RI.6.7: Integrate information presented in different media or formats.

W.6.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information of relevant content.

RL.6.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature in the 6-8th grade complexity.


I can cite textual evidence to support a claim.

I can identify grammar mistakes in a passage of writing and correct them.

I can write informational texts to examine a topic.

I can close read two reading passages, compare qualities of the theme, and write an extended response.

I can read a variety of different texts.

Monday: Bellwork. Students will close read the articles on Rosa Parks, along with watching the following biography: Students will answer the following comprehension questions as constructed responses:

  • In the article, history expert Adrienne Cannon describes Rosa Parks as having a “militant voice.” Choose the line from the article that BEST demonstrates Parks’ “militant voice” and explain why you chose it.
  • Who do you think is the intended audience for this article? Which lines from the text support your answer?

Tuesday: Bellwork. Students will compare and contrast the experiences of Anne Frank and Rosa Parks, and answer the following question in essay form, "How do past personal experiences affect a person’s actions and beliefs? How do Rosa Parks’ actions affect the lives of people today?"

Wednesday: Bellwork. Students will finish Monday and Tuesday's writing assignments. Those who are ready will move on to reading the article, "Fighting Hitler" and the poem, "The Shoes of the Dead" from Scope magazine. Students will answer the writing prompt, " How did Ben Kamm demonstrate heroism as a teenager? In what ways can we be a hero for others?" Students will write their response as an extended response.

Thursday: Bellwork. Students will finish all their writing responses, and read The Diary of a Young Girl.

Friday: Students will write a one-page writing reflection of what we learned about throughout the week and how it applies to our lives currently. Students will share as a class,along with reading the novel, A Diary of a Young Girl.

  • Next meeting! Tuesday, February 9th after school until 4:15 p.m. (Please notice that the date moved back a week due to a meeting complication. Thank you!

  • Partnering with local school to teach a lesson to students. (After the Georgia Milestones Testing)
  • Speaking to upcoming 5th graders on life at Madras Middle and as a sixth grader.
