Books for Classroom Libraries
FREE BOOKS!
I want to personally thank the students for bringing coins for the All for Books Coin Drive! The students raised around $160.00 from the drive and this money was used to purchase book for their classroom libraries! In addition Scholastic will also donate 160 books to the Kids is Need Foundation and the Kids in Distressed Situations Foundation.
I would also like to thank the Athens Book Group for Donating $150.00 allowing us to give away tons of free books to students at Kirkwood! This money was also counted towards the All for Books so that makes 310 books donated to Kids in Need! Way to go Eagles!
Computers are everywhere, but fewer schools teach computer science than 10 years ago. Good news is, we’re on our way to change this. If you've heard about the Hour of Code before, you might know it made history. More than 100 million students have tried an Hour of Code.
With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. Over 100 partners joined together to support this movement. Last year, every Apple Store in the world hosted an Hour of Code and even President Obama wrote his first line of code as part of the campaign.
This year, let's make it even bigger. I’m asking you to join in for the Hour of Code 2015. Please get involved with an Hour of Code event during Computer Science Education Week, December 7-13.
Get the word out. Host an event. Ask a local school to sign up. Or try the Hour of Code yourself -- everyone can benefit from learning the basics.

Check out the Symbaloo links below for TONS of great coding websites that are FREE! Some of the choices include Star Wars, Monster High, Hot Wheels, Minecraft and Frozen!
What's Going on in K-2?
First Grade: First grade has been learning about the difference between Realistic Fiction and Fantasy Fiction. Students are learning how to decipher whether a fictional could actually happen in real life or if it could never happen in real life by listening to some great titles during library class. Mrs. Person's 1st grader also helped me out with a Winter Around the World Collaborative Project where they drew winter scenes and wrote Winter Sense Poems which we recorded user the ChatterPix App. See the video below! We will work on this project with Mrs. Swenson's class next!
Second Grade: Second grade finished up their unit on Fiction vs. Nonfiction and will be moving on to a review of Fantasy vs Realistic Fiction before Winter Break as well as participating in Hour of Code next week! We also spent time constructing their turkeys disguises and Mo Willem's Pigeon as part of their persuasive writing project!
