First Grade AIM
Ancient China
This week in AIM...
Today in AIM our class jumped into our next big writing project which is writing and creating a shadow puppet play! It is believed that shadow puppets were discovered in ancient China so it’s the perfect challenge for us! I shared with them the legend of how this art form was discovered in ancient China and then we reviewed some of the science concepts behind shadow puppets including what light is and how shadows are formed. We did a little exploration of how shadows are formed by hunting for transparent, translucent and opaque objects in the room. Our class discovered that a shadow is made when an object blocks light; the object must be opaque or translucent to make a shadow. A transparent object will not make any shadow, as light will pass straight through it. We spent a few minutes watching some examples of shadow puppet plays and then finally broke into partners, reviewed the parts of a story (setting, characters, problem, events and resolution) and began completing the story outline. We had a very productive day!
