Knighthawk Family News
Pleasant Knoll Middle School
Message from Mr. Young
I can't believe that the first semester of PKMS has come to an end. Our students have been busy finishing up the first semester. We had wonderful performances from our Chorus and Band programs in December. We also had a dodgeball tournament that was a ton of fun for our students and raised money for our Athletic Booster Club.
I want to thank all of you for your support and cooperation with the opening of Pleasant Knoll Middle School. Our students have really embraced the new school over the first semester and have made it their own. We are excited to see what the rest of the year brings. Next semester will be busy with testing and end of the year activities, but we are ready for the challenges ahead.
We hope that all of you have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing all of our Knighthawks ready to learn on January 4th.

Our School-Wide Reading Initiative
Our school-wide literacy voyage began on October 16, 2017.
After eight weeks, 400 pages of text, hours spent keenly listening and reading along, then discussing with peers and teachers, we are finishing I Will Always Write Back by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda! This common text has allowed all our students and faculty to share a foundation from which they will continue to build upon with their own experiences and ideas. It has opened a door for talking about assumptions, stereotypes, and global awareness as well as showing kindness and generosity to others.
Please ask your child about this book, their thoughts about the text and what they have learned throughout this wonderful reading opportunity.
Our journey with this book continues… we will keep everyone updated.

Holiday Literacy Ideas!
The holidays are a busy and exciting time of year, but they are also full of great reading and writing opportunities. Click here to find some fun family literacy ideas for the holiday season. While many of them are suggestions for families with young children, your middle school child will enjoy participating too! Remember, no one is ever too old to enjoy a good story, so take time to read aloud some holiday classics as a family. Also, share some of your own childhood holiday memories. These will be moments your children will remember and treasure for a lifetime!
