A Message from Principal Menard
On behalf of the Alsup faculty and staff, welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We have had a fabulous start to the year, and we are so happy to see all of our students back for a new year!
I want to welcome our newest Eagles in kindergarten, along with their families! We hope you find Alsup to be an environment where your student thrives and grows to his or her highest potential. Everything we do-and every decision that is made at our school- is in the best interest of the children. We are here to serve our students and our community.
We are in for a fabulous year filled with "SOARing" Eagle pride, fall festivals, fun runs, winter wonderlands, celebrating literacy, and innovating and inventing with our STEAM Fridays! In addition to these exciting events we will also continue our drive of LEARNING! We have three major areas of learning that we will focus on this year. These include: Essential Elements of Instruction, academic conversations, and literacy.
Over the summer, Adams 14 began our partnership with MGT. The transition has gone really well, and I know we are on the right track with this partnership! We will have many visitors, coaches, and support personnel in our building throughout the year. All of this is in an effort to instruct and support our students at the highest levels.
Relationships are a very important component to our success here at Alsup. I strive to develop critical relationships with my students, staff, and families. I also encourage and expect our staff to do the same. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our students need support from both the school and home. We recognize that a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your student's education. We encourage you to guide and support your child's learning by:
1) ensuring that your child is in school daily and arrives on time ready for the day ahead.
2) ensuring that your child reads daily--at least 20 minutes each evening--to help develop that
love of reading and to promote literacy skill practice.
3) ensuring your child remains an active, participating student while in school
I am so honored to continue to lead this amazing school through another great year! My door is always open. If you have a question or concern, please let me know. You can send me an email at dmenard@adams14.org, you can leave me a voicemail at 303-653-5702, or you are welcome to make an appointment for a face-to-face conversation.
I leave you with a reminder I tell students at the end of each morning announcement: Be kind, take care of yourself, take care of each other, and take care of Alsup! Let's have a SOARing year!

Welcome Ms. Blackburn, new Assistant Principal!
To say that I am delighted to be part of Adams 14 and Alsup is an understatement. Thank you for the warm welcome and hospitality you have all shown me since I came on board three weeks ago. This community is loving, supportive, dedicated, and fun, and the students are simply extraordinary.
This is my fifth year as an Assistant Principal; prior to that, I was a secondary English language arts teacher, having taught in both charter and public schools in three districts. I was also a homeschooling mom for eight years to my two children, both of whom are now in their twenties and living extraordinary lives overseas. Having a background in a variety of educational settings and in middle, high school, and K-12 environments has given me a broad perspective, but education was not my first career. I graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in journalism and lived one life in advertising, public relations and then as a news reporter for THE KANSAS CITY STAR. Writing has always been my passion; being able to wield words - to harness their power - was a fire lit within me at the age of five. I love walking into classrooms and seeing students' eyes light up when their teachers read books to them or encourage their writing, just as my early elementary teachers did for me.
After going back to school to earn my teaching credentials, I began a master's degree in reading but later changed it to Educational Leadership. My love for literacy carried over into action research projects of the connection of self-esteem and reading achievement as well as the impact of improving reading automaticity, and my master's thesis was on alternatives to suspension.
When I don't have my nose in a book reading, I am working on writing a young adult novel, paddling my kayak, hiking on some trail somewhere, puttering in my vast flower gardens, watching Jayhawk basketball, or traveling and satiating my lust for new adventures. My current goals are to become fluent in Spanish and to finish several writing projects. I despise boredom! I'm an eternal optimist and lifelong learner; every day is an opportunity to learn and discover something new!
Please stop by my office and say hello; I can't wait to meet all of you at our upcoming events. I'm excited for the year ahead as we celebrate successes together! Go EAGLES!
September PIE Meeting
Wednesday, Sep 18, 2019, 05:30 PM
Alsup Elementary School, Birch Street, Commerce City, CO, USA
RSVPs are enabled for this event.
Arrival and Dismissal Reminders!
- The visitor lot is for parking only (you are getting out of the vehicle and walking up to the school with your student). It is not for dropping off.
- We have a very generous area for dropping off; it extends the entire length of the zone painted yellow in front of the school. Pull up to the curb as far as you can and have your students exit on the sidewalk side only.
- Please do not stop in the street and let children out, and please do not drop children off on the opposite side of the street. We want to minimize the number of people crossing the street and parking in front of neighbors' homes. Please model safe behavior by using crosswalks.
- Birch becomes a one way street during our drop off and pick up times. Travel south on Birch.
