Atlanta Tech Village's Spring 2018 Startup Student Connection
Did you get the tour? Some think that's a signal you are about to get a job offer, when your interviewer shows you around.
Not always. Some interviewers are so enthusiastic, everyone gets the tour. But this brings up a new question for your interviewer. What's the layout?
Many blue chip businesses are tearing down walls and demolishing cubicles in favor of open floor plans, because of successful tech companies with these layouts.
I've worked for a successful tech start-up with an open floor plan. Everyone sat in one room at tables with no special treatment for rank or seniority. There's no doubt it fosters creative collaboration. You are constantly in tune with everything happening in the organization. With a tech start-up, new ideas and innovations are exciting and everyone feels like part of the progress. I enjoyed it.
There are distractions. Like eating at the old Grill Room at The Four Seasons in New York, when a new person walked in, everyone's head whipped around to see. Every time you enter the office feels like making an entrance.
Open floor plans take self-discipline. Sometimes you need to focus and tune out all the moving parts. Our office manager had an office, because she had to do payroll. No one wanted her to be distracted.
Although the idea is that no one sits in a regular spot, people do settle into regular spots.
Some etiquette rules for the open floor plan:
- Allow some space, when colleagues need it. You can tell when someone doesn't want to be interrupted.
- Instead of constantly looking over someone's shoulder, communicate.
- Don't get so distracted that work doesn't get done.
- If you want to keep it creative, don't nest in one place.
Actually, these are good guidelines for any floor plan.
