What We Are Learning (10/10/16 - 10/14/16)
Reading and Writing - Making Fiction Come Alive: This week in reading, students studied story elements such as characters and plot (problem and solution) as part of fiction texts. Students asked relevant questions before, during, and after reading. They retell beginning, middle and end events of a story. Students made and confirmed predictions. They worked on building their stamina to read for longer periods of time. In writing, they generated a list of ideas for writing stories. They wrote about one thing, focusing on a small moment. They planned a story with beginning, middle and end. They also stretched their small moment by adding details to their story.
Math - This week students worked on making balanced equations (Ex: 4 + 2 = 6, four plus two more is the same as 6). Students learned that “balanced” means “the same as” or “equal.” Students also identified the missing addend (Ex: 5 + _ = 8). They will learn how to create their own story problem that matches their number sentence (Ex: 4 + 2 = 6, “Ms. Ham has 4 basketballs and Mr. Magos gave her 2 more. How many basketballs does Ms. Ham how all together?”). ***Students have a Math assessment coming up next week on balanced equations, finding the missing addend, skip count by 2’s up to 20, solving word problems and creating their own story problem.***
Science/Social Studies- This week, students worked on social studies. They learned what it means to be a good citizen. They identified how historical figures (Benjamin Franklin, Scott Key and Eleanor Roosevelt) have been good examples of good citizen. They will identify and describe the US flag, statue of liberty, liberty bell and the Alamo. They will also learn the meaning of the US Pledge and Texas Pledge.
