Student Council
Cottonwood’s Student Council is a service organization that gives students opportunities to help others. The Cottonwood Student Council is made up of a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer elected by Cottonwood teachers. Officers are all 5th grade students. Each third, fourth, and fifth grade class elects two representatives for the council. StuCo meets once a month.
Each year, the officers decide what projects they would like to undertake. Service projects for 2015-2016 include:
- October-Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF
- November-Host a food/toiletry drive for the Andover Food Bank and the Sunshine Children’s Home; host a Week of Thanks to express gratitude to Andover firemen and police officers, District Office staff, district maintenance and grounds staff, CES cafeteria workers, custodians, and bus drivers, and CES staff
- December-Christmas caroling at Life Care Center of Andover; bell-ringing for Salvation Army; dessert cart for staff at Cottonwood
- January-Make fleece blankets for the children at the Sunshine Children’s Home
- February-Write thank-you notes to all staff members at Cottonwood
- March-Clean all classroom desks at CES; dessert cart for teachers;
- April-Make a treat for the children at Sunshine Children’s Home; teacher appreciation gifts
- May-Clean up the grounds of Cottonwood
Each month Student Council members will read to the residents at Life Care Center of Andover. We will take Brinkley and Brandy (therapy dogs) with us as much as possible.
Student Council also runs a School Store every Tuesday morning from 8:15-8:40. Students can buy erasers, pencils, pens, highlighters, etc. from the store. Prices range from $.25 to $2.00. Proceeds from the store finance our service projects. Any leftover money at the end of the year is given to Mrs. Rooks to use for Cottonwood. If you have any questions about Student Council, feel free to contact Jill Hodge at hodgej@usd385.org.

William Allen White Challenge”
Students in Grades 3 – 5 may participate in a reading program starting now and ending April 8, 2016. Students can earn AR points and prizes by reading select books. Students must earn 70% or better to count the book.
The WAW reading program is sponsored by Emporia State University and is named after the famous Kansas author/editor William Allen White. Each year a new set of children’s books are selected for the Kansas students to read. Students who read two or more books may vote for their favorite. The winner is announced in late April. Last year’s winner was Malcom at Midnight.
The number of books required for prizes vary by grade level. The culminating prize is a pizza party in late April.
