The first half of the name,"Dendro", means tree, "Aspis", means that it coils or wraps itself. "poly", mans a lot or many, and "lepis", means scaled. So the Black Mambas whole name means," Many scaled tree snake". The Black Mamba closely related to turtles, crocodiles and lizards. They live in South Africa and like living in low open habitats like rocky places and the woods. The Black Mamba is a carnivore so it feeds on small mammals such as birds, rats, squirrels and mice. When Black Mambas mate the female will lay 6-17 eggs in a damp, warm burrow. The Black Mamba is a nervous snake and is easily threatened. They travel in pairs or small groups. The Black Mamba grows up to 14 feet in length and can travel up to 12 miles per hour. They can weigh up to 3.5 lbs. The Black Mamba can travel on land and on the ground.
