Dear Parent/Guardian,
In 2013 our Texas Legislature passed House Bill 5 (HB 5) changing the graduation requirements for students entering the ninth grade. Students will still be required to take core classes in English, math, science, and social studies as well as PE, foreign languages, fine arts, and electives. School districts must ensure that each student, on entering ninth grade, selects an endorsement that the student intends to earn. An endorsement is a focused area of study that defines a high school student’s career interest. All entering ninth grade students for the 2023-2024 academic school year will declare their endorsement selection (in writing).
Counselors have been presenting the new graduation requirements and endorsements to 8th graders and have been assisting the students to make an endorsement selection.
Advisement Conferences will be held at all middle schools during January.
Middle school and high school counselors will review the Personal Graduation Plan, endorsement and complete next year’s course slip with each 8th grade student and their parent(s). As required by the state, the Personal Graduation Plan and endorsement will be signed by the parent and student at the Advisement Conference. The Advisement Conference Schedule below indicates the dates and times parents, students, and counselors are to meet. To find your student’s schedule time, locate the slot where your student’s last name fits in. An evening session is indicated on the conference schedule but there are a limited number of slots. Attend the conference at your scheduled date and time slot so that we may better serve you and your child. These conferences are approximately 15 minutes in length.
If you have any questions please contact your campus counselor at (210) 438-6520.
Estimados Padre/Guardian,
(210) 438-6520.

IB Focus/Enfoque del IB
At Longfellow Middle School, we strive to develop within students the IB Learner Profile Attributes, which are the foundation of an International Baccalaureate Program. The IB Learner Profile Attributes are fostered across the curriculum and throughout the school day, helping to shape global citizens in a more peaceful world. This month's Learner Profile Attribute is Open-minded!
Open-minded IB Scholars understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities.
Parents:
As we work with your scholar to become more open-minded, here is an article and graphic image with affirmation statements that you can use at home to reinforce these efforts.

Your child will ask sensitive questions about the differences she observes between herself and others including gender, skin colour and disabilities.Answer them honestly, and explain that everyone is different and this is what makes life more interesting.
