Weekly News--November 29- December 3

Principal's Message

Welcome December! This is such a fun time of the year with our students. We had many of them wearing holiday shirts and sweaters for our dress up day today.

Below are photos from our PBIS Awards Assembly. Our Bulldogs are Safe, Responsible, and Respectful! We also had 93 students who received attendance awards for the month of November. Eighty-eight of those students had "Perfectly Perfect" Attendance which means they were at school on time every day! Excellent work! Each month that a student receives the Perfectly Perfect attendance award, a different prize is received. We have 8 students who have been on time to school every day this school year! Amazing!

Our PTA Breakfast with Santa has been changed. Students will be visiting with Santa in our library during the week of December 13. Also that week, we will have a "Jingle Walk" which will be similar to our Halloween parade. Our students are learning carols that we will all be singing outside on the playground on December 16 from 12:30-1:00 p.m. Parents are welcome to attend. Please check in at the office for a visitor's badge.

Have a great weekend!

Cafeteria Competition

In order to promote good social skills and behavior in the cafeteria, we started a new competition on December 1 with our classes. Each class can earn a "paw" for using quiet voices, good manners, and cleaning up their tables. This aligns with our PBIS rules of being safe, responsible, and respectful. After receiving 10 paws, classes earn a reward.

What Our Bulldogs Are Learning

Our Bulldogs jumped right back into learning this week! Below are photos of just some of the learning happening in our classrooms. Mrs. Moore's students listen carefully as she provides instruction. Mrs. Bonilla-Chicas' class made predictions before reading a story. After, they read the story with partners. Mrs. Terry's class was learning to use >, <, or = symbols when comparing two numbers. Miss Wiens' students are writing sentences with details and learning about parts of speech. Mrs. Yocius' second grade students are working on subtraction with regrouping. Lots of great learning happening every day in our classrooms!

Staff Feature

Each week we will use this section to introduce you to our staff at McKinley. This week we continue to introduce to you our teachers.

Mrs. Susie Shrum--Second Grade

Mrs. Shrum has been working for Susanville School District for ten years. She has worked at all three schools in the Special Education Department. This is Mrs. Shrum's first year as a teacher at McKinley. She stated that she has always wanted to be a teacher and loves to see the "ah-ha" moments that happen when students understand a concept for the first time. Mrs. Shrum likes teaching math because she feels that it is more concrete for students. Something interesting about Mrs. Shrum is that once swam with dolphins! Her favorite animals though are baby sloths because they are so cute and love hanging around. We love having Mrs. Shrum as a teacher her at McKinley and her experience throughout the district is a huge benefit to our students!
