Studying American History!
We are supremely excited to get going on our Spring Expedition! We are taking the next few weeks before our official launch (Week of February 16th) to build some background on life in the colonies between Jamestown and the French and Indian War. We will be watching documentaries, looking at sources, and beginning a novel study in support of our expedition work. When watching documentaries we always like to remind both parents and students that we are studying a revolution and some of the documentaries and sources will depict violent times. We talk with students about how to respond to and respect the fact that these depictions do show real events and real people from the past (but that we are obviously not seeing them "for real"). Please let us know if any concerns arise for you or your child as we begin our history work.
Speaking of the Revolution...
We are also excited to share that we will be doing a novel study in support of our expedition. We will be reading Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. This story follows Isabel, an enslaved girl in New York, as the Revolution unfolds in the colony. It is a beautifully written book and we encourage you to purchase a copy to read along with us. This book is also one in a series and if your child enjoys Chains I would recommend Forge as a follow up novel.
Friendly reminder that there is no school on Monday, Thursday, or Friday next week!
