A MESSAGE FROM MRS. FORD
Well, we got just a glimpse of fall-like weather the other day and people were out and about decorating with all their fall decorum excited for the next season to begin. As soon as the cool weather came, the warm weather returned. My poor plants are not sure what to do! It’s like Mother Nature is laughing at our expense. How true is this with our everyday struggles? One day goes great and then, BAM! We are blindsided by things that seem to be out of our control. Don’t let the bad days overpower all the good that is happening. It is so nice to have all your children here at school. We have an awesome staff that are going above and beyond to help in any way they can spending countless hours planning, learning, and teaching. We have you, the parents and guardians, communicating back and forth with us to help in any way you can, and we all get up every day and continue to be the best we can be. Some days are better than others but we have oh so many things to be thankful for! When my day is not going so great, I rely on those around me to pick me up and I hope I am that person on the other days for those who need me. Be that encourager, that up-lifter, that person who doesn’t succumb to the negativity around them. Let’s be the example we want our children to be no matter what the weather/life throws at us!

Sandwich CUSD #430 is following the most recent guidance from the IDPH when deciding if a student needs to be sent home from school. Students will be sent home or denied entry to school if ANY of the following symptoms are present: Fever (100.4°F or higher), new onset of moderate to severe headache, shortness of breath, new cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, new loss of sense of taste or smell, fatigue from unknown cause, muscle or body aches from unknown cause. Per the IDPH, medical evaluation and testing are strongly recommended for all persons with COVID-like symptoms. If you are interested in having your symptomatic child tested at school using the BinaxNow rapid antigen test, please keep them home and call the school to schedule a time.
FANTASTIC 4TH GRADE
We are halfway through the first trimester already! The fourth graders are well into their daily routines and feeling comfortable navigating their Chromebooks and Google Classroom. Most of our assignments are posted on their teacher’s Google Classroom, so make sure you’re checking in with your student each day to see what they are working on and that they are getting their work turned in on time!
In Reading, we are on to the second half of the first unit, which focuses on skeletons! A few of the things the students have learned so far are the difference between an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton, and the different types of joints we have. They will be researching an animal to write about, and then they will create an infographic of their animal.
In Math, we are wrapping up multiplication and will be moving right into division. Doing Reflex every day is very important! When they know their multiplication facts, division is a lot easier!
In Social Studies, we are learning about the Constitution and the branches of government.
In Science, each class is working on one of the Foss kits with their teacher. The three units are Soils, Rocks, & Landforms, Energy, and Environments.

FABULOUS 5TH GRADE
The cooler temperatures are settling in, and so are the students and staff. We are continuing to work on understanding the rules and expectations of fifth grade. Students need to show their responsibility by turning in their best work, being kind and considerate to others, and being prepared for class with charged chromebooks and having their necessary materials here at school.

MUSIC NEWS
Monthly Music Notes
In 4th grade, students have been learning about the basic rhythms that we encounter as musicians every day. Among these several rhythms have been a multitude of activities ranging from call and response instrument playing as well as memory games. In the past week I have had students lead rhythm memory activities that encompass the three main types of learning: visual, kinesthetic, and aural. As the 4th graders would agree, we take an “outside of the box” approach when learning about the foundations of music production.
Meanwhile in 5th grade, students have been participating in world drumming lessons from the west coast of Africa. Additionally, they have learned about the gankogui and shekere; two African percussion instruments. They have done an impeccable job of learning why teamwork is so important not only in real life, but also in music. Also, 5th graders who have ordered instruments will be starting lessons in October once they arrive at the school. Until then we will decorate the band wall with our customized “Among Us” characters and practice note literacy.
Both grades have been introduced to an online program called “BandLab.” This allows students to create their own song files by mixing loops of different instruments and genres. It works similar to Google Classroom in which I can make assignments for students so they can create songs to share with the class. We will be using this periodically throughout the year to help support new concepts.
