School Board Update: New Communication Tool
The Board has created a new communication tool called School Board Update, which summarizes the discussions and actions taken by the Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors during their meetings. The newsletter will be updated after each Board Meeting and can be found on the District website at www.IowaCitySchools.org/BoardUpdate. You have the option to follow the updates and receive email notifications when each newsletter is released. To do this, click the orange button to the right of the newsletter that reads ‘Follow Iowa City Schools Board of Directors’. I hope you will subscribe and stay up to date!
Brian Collier, Visiting Author
Brian Collier is coming to visit all 1st and 2nd graders at Lincoln and Mann at New Hoover Elementary on Tuesday, November 6, 10-10:45AM. Collier is a four-time recipient of a Caldecott Honor: Martin's Big Words, Rosa, Dave the Potter, and Trombone Shorty. Collier has received Coretta Scott King Award recognition as the winner or honor recipient for nine books. The annual King Awards, one for an illustrator and one for a writer, recognize the year's "most distinguished portrayal of African American experience in literature for children or teens".
Many thanks to Hills Bank and the ICCSD Foundation for supporting the tradition of enriching the lives of our young learners by funding our visiting author program.
Winter Clothing and Gear Expectations
With lots of winter gear and coat and tight quarters with hooks and cubbies, it is good practice to teach all children how to store their hats and gloves in their sleeves. This practice has many benefits: hats and mittens are easy to find, keeps our hallways and classroom floors clear of gear, and may reduce the spread of head lice. Please remind students that we do not share hats, scarves, and earmuffs! Please label all clothing and boots with your student’s name so we can reunite found items with their owner.
If you need assistance with winter clothing, boots, snow pants, and gear, please contact Ladiester, our Student and Family Advocate at janania.ladiester@iowacityschools.org or 319-688-1145
Inclement Weather Guidelines
The safety and well-being of students and staff is our top priority and the decision to close, delay or release school is no simple matter. Before deciding to modify the school day due to extreme weather conditions, the Superintendent consults with a variety of experts both inside and outside of the District. Our commitment is to keep students, families and staff safe, as well as keep the community informed of weather-related school closings, delays and cancellations. Please take time to read through the district’s Inclement Weather Guidelines. https://www.iowacityschools.org/domain/35
******Late start times may vary. Please note that, if we do have a late start due to inclement weather on a Thursday, we will dismiss at 2:55 PM (not 1:55 PM).*****
