The happiest country
The learning environment goes far beyond our borders in Mr. Elman's AP Human Geography class. In an effort to globalize education, students were assigned a country which they had to represent as the “happiest country." Members of the class were put in groups, and there were six countries represented: Iceland, Bhutan, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Qatar, and Thailand. Students were asked to read their assigned chapter about their country from The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner and to focus on their country's cultural identity, quotes from the chapter, and elements that surprised the author.
Research was geared towards the country's centripetal forces. They wrote essays and created a presentation intended to convince their classmates that their country is the happiest. Students also mentioned the best places for tourists to visit and families to live. Aside from the research, they also conducted interviews with people who have visited or lived in that country.
Students voted for three finalists after seeing their classmates' presentations. To conclude this exciting lesson, students will have the opportunity to conduct a roundtable happiness debate to determine the happiest country.

Marine Conservation Club
Marine Conservation Club is a newly created club at Riviera established last year. Founder of the club, AnaSofia Padilla ‘22, created the student organization in order to spread awareness for endangered marine life and polluted oceans. Last year, the organization was able to attend multiple beach cleanup events. COVID-19 has halted most oceanic events, but the organization has found different ways to help through social media, donations, and socially distant beach cleanups. Last Friday, MCC presented their ideas to middle school and high school students during lunch. After a quick recap of their club, the members asked the Riv students trivia questions and handed out ocean related prizes to the students who answered correctly. Marine Conservation Club meets every other Wednesday over Zoom. To continue to spread information, follow the club on instagram@marineconservation_rps .

In the Art Studio: 2D3D with Ms. Parker
This week in Ms. Parker’s 2D3D class, students were introduced to a new challenge. Ms. Parker tested her students’ creative and critical thinking skills by assigning them a project involving Styrofoam cups. The 2D3D students had to use a total of 6 cups in order to build an abstract sculpture. They placed their cups on top of a secure slot construction and began to carve smooth details while using an X-ACTO knife. There was no glue or adhesive helping them on this challenge. The outcome of these pieces was magnificent, Ms. Parker even says, “As an art teacher, it always thrills me when I give the exact same art challenge to every student and the results are all so unique and different… what a FABULOUS job my 2D33D Art students did!”
