A Message from the Principal:
Greetings Discovery Families,
Thank you for your interest and support of your student and our school. Even though we currently remain in distance learning, our focus at Discovery continues to be to provide each child with new challenges that will result in a rewarding school experience. No matter where your child is doing their learning, we want them to be happy and successful in school and you play a key role. That role is to continually show interest in and to support your child. A child who knows his or her family is interested in, and supports, the school program will almost always have fewer problems in school and will enjoy greater success.
At Discovery we implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). This system helps us establish a positive school culture and provides necessary supports to keep our students and school safe, which allows for effective teaching and learning. PBIS supports positive social expectations; acknowledges positive behavior, provides consistent
consequences for problem behavior, and provides an opportunity for us to collect data to support schoolwide decision-making as well as individual interventions.
Our Discovery POD Expectations are as follows:
Practice safety
Own responsibility
Demonstrate Respect
Students, while the year ahead will have its challenges, we believe in you and believe you you will have a wonderful year. It will be a year where you continue to build on your strengths in order to ensure your success. As a school staff, we will support you as you continue to grow, and we will help you develop and build on your strengths. Parents, please remember this is your school and we welcome your involvement. If you have any questions, please call our office. I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the school year and to providing a safe and productive learning environment that paves the path for student success.
In partnership,
Shannon Koehnen

Privacy Reminders
While learning is taking place in your homes rather than inside classrooms, student privacy protection laws still apply. Please help us protect students’ privacy by NOT taking or sharing photos or videos of your child that include Zoom class meetings where other student images or names are visible. Thank you.

Annual Title I Survey
As a parent/guardian of a child attending a Title I school, you are an important part of our team. Your input is vital as we plan and implement parent involvement activities in our school. The focus of all Title I programs is to help eligible students meet the same high academic standards expected of all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status and background.
A Title I survey provides us with important information and feedback to assist us in supporting all students and families. This survey is confidential and will be used in future planning of our parent involvement programs and school events. The Title I survey will be available on October 15th, following our Title I Annual Meeting.
MUKILTEO SCHOOL DISTRICT WALL CALENDARS--NOW AVAILABLE!
The Mukilteo School District's wall calendars for 2020-2021 arrived at school last week and were passed out during Supply and Material pick-up. If you have not yet received your calendar, families can stop by the Discovery main office during the week between 8:00am-4:00pm to pick one up. Remember to wear a mask. Calendars will be just inside our office doors in a box. Limit 1 per family. We will also plan to pass them out during Curbside Library check-out for the next two weeks.
Curbside Library Check-Out
Does your child need books at home? This week is curbside library check-out for 3-5 grade students. Check out days are Thursdays between 8:00-9:00 a.m. or from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. All books must be requested prior to your arrival on Thursday. The procedures for check-out are as follows:
- 3-5 Grades (This week - Thursday, Oct. 16th)
- Use Destiny to put books on hold
- Optional Google Form that is genre based to request books
- Videos for how to accomplish these tasks are on Schoology
- K-2 Grades (Next check-out day - Thursday, Oct. 22nd)
If students have fines or overdue books from last year, they will get one book until all other books are accounted for. Students/families can:
- Return books
- “pay off” fines by reading and AR testing until the amount is paid
- OTHER – individualized plans to pay off
- 1st - 5th grade students with all library books accounted for will have an opportunity to check out up to 4 books on their account.
- Kindergarten will start with 2 books as it’s their first opportunity to practice this skill.
Weekly Grab and Go Meals - Available Tuesdays and Thursdays
ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
Attendance is taken based on student's participation in Schoology. Work does NOT have to be done during scheduled class time, it can be done anytime of the day. However, if you do not show engagement by logging into your teachers Schoology page, attending the class Zoom meeting or working independently on assignments provided by your teacher, you will be marked absent for the day.
When students have unexcused absences, their families will receive a daily pre-recorded message at 6:00pm. However, students can avoid this absence by logging into Schoology and completing work after receiving the call. If the student does not correct the absence by logging in that evening, the absence will stay marked as unexcused. Please call 425.366.2700 to report an absence.

HOW TO EMAIL A TEACHER
With distance learning, there is a greater chance that your student will need to email his/her teachers. While parents may have this skill down, it is important to teach our students how to successfully send an email to a teacher.
Students can email within Schoology message icon at top of screen . If you want to email outside of the Schoology site, staff emails are the person's last name and first two initials followed by @mukilteo.wednet.edu. (Easiest way to get staff email address is using the new District App and clicking on "Staff Directory"--directions posted above.)
