COVID-19, Social Distancing, and Why It's Important!
Social distancing, also called “physical distancing,” means keeping space between yourself and other people outside of your home. To practice social or physical distancing:
- Stay at least 6 feet (2 meters) from other people
- Do not gather in groups
- Stay out of crowded places and avoid mass gatherings
In addition to everyday steps to prevent COVID-19, keeping space between you and others is one of the best tools we have to avoid being exposed to this virus and slowing its spread locally and across the country and world.
While COVID-19 is spreading in your area, everyone should limit close contact with individuals outside your household in indoor and outdoor spaces. Since people can spread the virus before they know they are sick, it is important to stay away from others when possible, even if you have no symptoms. Social distancing is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.
Be sure to use reliable sources for information about COVID-19. The CDC is a great resource and is updated daily.
Our office is closed, and staff are working from home. Please email highschool@crosbyscholars.org to connect with us!

UNC System Changes
On March 30, 2020, the UNC System announced changes to the minimum admission requirements for the next three years, beginning with the class of 2021. These updates will help assist students as many events are canceled due to COVID-19.
Students applying to public colleges beginning with the 2020 application cycle must achieve one of the following to meet minimum admission requirements:
- A weighted GPA of 2.5
- A composite score of 19 on the ACT
- A combined (reading and math) score of 1010 on the SAT
Typically, applicants are required to earn the GPA and either the ACT or the SAT minimum. While this directly impacts Juniors during the 2020-21 school year, these policies may affect younger students, and thus we want to make you and your family aware.

Stress Relief Tips for Students
- Exercise. Develop a routine that works for you, whether it is yoga, running, or virtual zumba classes.
- Breathing Exercises. These can be done anywhere, even in the middle of a test when your anxiety threatens to become out of control, thus sabotaging the ability to perform to your potential.
- Music. Choose the genre and/or artist that contributes to feelings of calm and well-being and/or a brighter mood. There is no one "right" type of music for everyone.
- Organization. Chaos leads to anxiety! Maintain a calendar of your e-learning assignments and due dates, and create a clutter-free study area.
- Eat Healthfully. Maintain regular eating habits and try not to snack too much during the day. Drink plenty of water and stay away from sugary drinks.
- Adequate Sleep. High school students need eight-ten hours of sleep each night, so even if our routines are not the same right now, still try to get plenty of rest each night.

Tips for Parents During COVID-19
What can families do to stay healthy and cope during these uncertain times associated with COVID-19.
- Connect with family via Call, Skype, Facetime, Zoom, write letters or create cards to relatives, create a family tree together
- Safely connect with friends and neighbors by going outside, attending a virtual concert together, or play an online game.
- Connect with culture by reading books, cooking a meal, visiting a virtual museum via Google arts and culture
- Connect with Yourself by journaling or reading, exercising, or taking a warm bath
Manage stress by being kind to yourself, establishing a daily routine and reaching out for help when needed.
