Message from Principal Masone

Dear Families,

Fifth grade had an exciting week at Camp Shadybrook where it was cold and rainy AND fun. Students learned how to kayak, throw tomahawks, rock climb and more. We have a terrific cadre of fifth grade students who made camp especially enjoyable.

Next week, we have conferences on October 20 and 21. Conferences will be offered in-person and virtually. On Thursday, October 20, we will have early dismissal at 12:30 and no school on October 21, to accommodate conferences. After meeting with your child's teacher, come check out student work in our hallways, along with our Book Fair.

We now offer after school care for elementary students at MSES. Please see the flyer below.

Keep reading with your child at home and check out this link to extend your child's learning.

If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please contact the front office at 685-2195. If your child is ill, please also fill out the health form on the District webpage.

Kindergarten AYE

We are still learning about stories and fables in Kindergarten this week! Here are some questions to Ask Your Expert:

What is a trickster tale? (A story where one of the other characters tricks the other characters). In the story Tug-of-War, which character was the trickster? (The Turtle). What was the moral of the story Tug-of-War? (Big animals can be friends with little animals). What does it mean to boast? (To brag). Is boasting kind? Why or why not? (Answers will vary). In the story Jumping Mouse, which character showed kindness to Jumping Mouse? (The frog). What gift does Jumping Mouse give the bison? (His eyesight). What gift does Jumping Mouse give to the wolf? (His sense of smell). What does Jumping Mouse turn into at the end of the story because he did not misuse his powers? (An Eagle so he could fly to the far off land).

5th Grade Camp Shady Brook

This past week all fifth grade students along with 11 staff members trooped up to Camp Shadybrook outside of Deckers, Colorado for our annual fifth grade camp! Camp allows us time to get out into our gorgeous Colorado mountains to learn, build our classroom community, and have fun! There's also several standards based activities we complete as well! Our rotations include: Survival skills, life and death (food chain), orienteering (compass use), canoeing/kayaking, nature hike (forest ecology), archery, rock climbing, sling shots, underworld (water and stream health), low ropes, and a night hike. The students also learned about the forest fires' effect on our environment, the types of trees we have here in Colorado, and much more! S'mores and a campfire rounded out our first day at camp. Sleeping in cozy cabins and waking up in the fresh Colorado mountains all aglow with fall colors truly made camp a memorable event. A grand time was had by all at this annual tradition.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Fifth Grade Families,

Fifth grade students are invited to join Battle of the Books. Practice begins on November 2, in Mrs. Kazmier's classroom during lunch. Any interested reader in fifth grade is welcome to come and see what the Battle of the Books is all about! This is open only to fifth grade students.

Original Works Art Fundraiser!

Art students have been working hard during their time in art class to create beautiful pieces of art for our annual art fundraiser, Original Works. Next week, your child will be bringing home a packet which will include their artwork and ordering supplies. Some students were unable to finish within our class time together and may need to complete their artwork at home. If you are interested in ordering any products, please return your completed order form, artwork and payment to MSES no later than Friday, October 29th. Products will arrive the week of Dec. 3rd. Thank you as always for supporting the art program at our school. With last year’s profit we were able to buy enough art supplies to put together nearly 100 supply kits for our families that may need supplies at home. Please contact Carrie Dunlap at cdunlap@mssd14.org or our front office if you have any questions or are in need of an art supply kit for your child.
