The Weekly Howl
St. Francis Catholic School - Saturday, June 1st
Dear Parents & Friends of SFCS,
This week is the last of the 2018 -2019 school for the students. There are many activities planned while the teachers wrap up their curriculum. Parents are welcome to attend the screening of "Like: A Documentary about the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives". In fact parents that will attend will receive a NUT Card to give to their child. Thank you Mrs. Safe for organizing the activities of our first Media Day at SFCS!
Mrs. Sweeney and Mrs. MacDonald are busy working on coordinating another awesome Talent Show. Parents are welcome to watch all the talent our students have to show off in the gymnasium on Wednesday in the gym.
Students need to wear their PE uniform for field day. Students in the lower grades may wear a spirit wear t-shirt with athletic shorts. If they do not have a spirit wear shirt then it would be preferred if they wear a blue, white or yellow t-shirt.
Students need to wear their school uniform on the last day of school. Remember it is a 11:30am dismissal. The end of the year Awards Assembly and Moving Up Ceremony will be at 10:00am.
I hope everyone has a restful weekend and I looked forward to all the many activities we have with the students for our final week together!
Sincerely in Christ,
Brian Pope
Principal

Hope Pack Program
Summer Work
Option 1: Students can complete Summer Solutions workbooks. If students complete the workbook in its entirety then they will receive 1 NUT card. Students will receive one NUT card for each workbook completed. Workbooks must be turned in on the first day of school. Make sure to select the workbooks for the grade that the student is currently in.
OR
Option 2: Students can complete one math quiz per week on Pathblazer. We will track students progress and students must complete one per week over the 10 weeks of summer. Doing a bunch of quizzes the last week or couple weeks of summer will not count. If students complete 5 quizzes each week for the first 5 weeks of summer will receive a NUT card on the first day of school. The same for the second 5 weeks of summer. So students can potentially earn two NUT cards at the beginning of the year. Students should remember their login to access their lessons.
Students will not receive NUT cards for doing both Pathblazer and Summer Solutions. Students have to choose one or the other. I encourage also students to participate with the Summer Reading Program that Mrs. Safe has organized.
Please feel free to reach out to Ms. McGlynn or myself if you have any questions.
Summer Reading Cinema
Dear Parents,
This summer’s reading theme is going to be “books that are movies”! Below is a list of Kindergarten through 5th grade suggested reading titles. The students who participate will get to attend a movie screening on the first day of school! The selection will be a surprise but it will definitely be from the list… popcorn included!
Please have your child log their reading time over the summer on the attached reading log. Parents must initial the reading time. In order to attend the Summer Reading Cinema students must read a minimum of 20 total hours and log them. That is an average of 2 hours per week. Easy, right? They do not have to read exclusively from the list but please help them to read a few of the titles so that they can experience “books that are movies”.
The reading logs will be admission tickets to the movie so the students MUST have them to get in. The movie is on the first day of school so it will be important to remember to bring the reading logs.
Be sure to check Barnes & Noble as well as our awesome public library for summer reading programs too!
Be sure to contact me with any questions and HAPPY READING!

Media Day at SFCS - Tuesday, June 4th
Dear Parents,
As the school year is winding down, we are actually winding up here in Media Science! On Tuesday June 4, we will be hosting Media Day. The goal of Media Day is to expose and educate our students about fun and different types of media.
The morning will be focused on our PK - 3rd graders. Jevon Daly, a local author and musician will be stopping by the library to read his book He Needs a Chihuahua as well as sharing his experience as a contributing writer to many local publications.
During lunch, all students will enjoy entertainment by a saxphone trio from the Hilton Head Plantation Big Band. While recorded music fits the exact definition of media, I thought it would be fun to expose the kids to some live music. In the words of the Big Band, "Our main effort is to promote youth music in the low country through donations, scholarship, instrument purchases and giving of our time to schools and young musicians.", so we are very thankful that they have offered to donate their time to our school! Feel free to come and have lunch with your child and enjoy the music!
Finally, for our 4th - 7th graders (8th graders are welcome to come too), we will be hosting a screening of "Like: A Documentary about the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives" at 1:00 in the Family Center. This is an engaging documentary that explores the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. The goal of the film is to inspire us to self-regulate. Parents are encouraged to attend since good habits start at home. Mr. Pope has agreed to give a NUT Card for next year to any student whose parents attend the screening! Yes, we feel it's that important! There will be a discussion following the movie and
I have included a link if you would like to know more. https://www.thelikemovie.com/ I have also attached a flyer.
Wow! What a day! I have had a great time planning this event and look forward to enjoying it with our kids! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Blessings,
Mrs. Safe
Congratulations 2nd Grade!!!
