Passion for Space
Blog Article by Mo Detrick, 5th Grade Teacher at Father Andrew White School
Do you have a passion for rockets and all things space? Do you like to communicate in 280 characters or with pictures on social media? Can you be flexible? (Ha! Teachers can be flexible!) If so, I have just the opportunity for you! Introducing @NASASocial
I started following @NASASocial on Twitter in 2009, right after we moved to Leonardtown, MD. Somehow, I found out that the rocket launches from NASA’s Wallops Island facility could be viewed from my area. Over the past 9 years, I have viewed several launches and one very unfortunate explosion (Space X in 11/2105) from my front yard. I shared my enthusiasm for the launches with my family, neighbors, and my students at Father Andrew White, S.J. School.
I applied to several rocket launch viewings around the country, only to be waitlisted every time. However, two weeks ago, I received an email from HQ Social that I moved off the waitlist for the Antares Orbital ATK Cargo launch. I was invited to attend a behind the scenes tour of the launch on Wallops Island for May 21st.
Road Trip to NASA Wallops
The next 36 hours was a whirlwind of excitement. I drove the 4 hour trip to Chincoteague Island in torrential downpours and flooding. I arrived for my check-in, and was immediately in surrounded by other space enthusiasts. As we moved to the press room for introductions and the itinerary, I was a bit nervous that I may not be able to keep up with the scientific language. In the audience were scientists, engineers, mathematicians, Youtubers, lawyers, journalists, photographers, rock band members, and teachers. Little did I know, that we were about become a close-knit #NASAsocial ATK -09 family.
My brain became a sponge absorbing all the math, science, and media sharing that was going on around me in the press conferences. From understanding a Cold Atom Lab to cement mixology in microgravity, the knowledge that I was being exposed to is a teacher’s dream. I began imagining how to share this information with my students and my twitter followers around the country.
We loaded tour buses for a preview of the launch pad.
As we approached the parking lot, there was a buzz of enthusiasm on setting our eyes upon the Orbital ATK’s Antares rocket and it wasn’t even launch time yet! After the launch pad viewing, we toured the Horizon Integration Facility (HIF) and viewed the next rocket scheduled for late fall and then toured Mission Control Center. It was unbelievable to be in the room where it all happens! While on this facility tour, we had a surprise visit from NASA administrator, Jim Bridenstine. We finished our day by touring the machine facility and scientific balloon building. It became clear as I listened, whatever your career interests are you can enjoy working with NASA. We boarded the buses back for the visitor center and I called it an early evening as we had a 2:OO AM bus departure. Admittedly, I had a hard time falling asleep because nervous I would oversleep.
Launch Day
We boarded our buses and were escorted by police to the viewing area 1.8 miles away from the launch pad. In the dark, my #nasasocial family immediately went to set up their cameras and began updating their followers on the launch updates.
By 3:30 AM I had visited the hospitality tent and enjoyed a quick respite of cookies and coffee. We all were keeping a close eye on the storm cloud on the weather map. The hour went by quickly with mission control voices in the background. Around 4:28 am, it was announced there would be a 10 min delay and the 5 min window moved to 4:44 a.m. I reached in my backpack and pulled out my rosary. Mission Control came back on to announce the weather threat had dissipated.
Checking my phone, the time was 4:43 and the countdown began. 5, 4, 3, 2, and then 1. Click, click, click, went all the cameras.
Antares ignited and there was a plume of billowing clouds that covered the launch pad. The noise of the rocket quickly enveloped us all as we stood in awe. Cheers went up and plenty of us wiped away tears of joy.
We returned to the parking lot by 5:30 a.m. and I quickly jumped in the car for my drive back to FAW. What a day this would be for teaching! #ADWJOY
