Thesis

In the documentary Blackfish, Gabriela Couperthwaite is successful in illustrating the many ways why the public should be outraged at Sea World and its dishonesty about the orca attacks involving stock footage of the exact attacks and interviews of witnesses exposing the truth.

Defining the Purpouse

The public should be outraged and disappointed in Sea World and their dishonesty. Sea World has lied about the truth to the public many times through many deaths. They tried covering up the true events that has happened in the past, making sure the animals of Sea World doesn't receive a bad reputation no matter the lie or how big it is. Sea World has told many stories about certain attacks that have specific stock footage and interviews from witnesses that expose the truth.

Stock Footage

There are many examples of stock footage in Blackfish, a good portion of that footage has to do with the orca attacks on some of the trainers. One example of the stock footage is when one of the orcas were jumping at the trainer. This ended with the death of this trainer because he was smacked and crushed in between the two orcas. This piece of stock footage caused the audience to develop a very sad emotional appeal. The thing that tipped it off is how that so called "accident" was lied on.

Another piece of stock footage that left the audience in awe is when a very popular trainer Dawn Brancheau, got pulled and dragged around the pool by the killer wale named Tilikum. Tilikum had a very unexpected attack on Dawn that left the audience in awe once again. The fact that Sea World blamed her death on her ponytail is ridiculous. There have been many trainers at Sea World, better yet over the country that has trained wile wearing a long pony tail. Having a pony tail was never a problem until now. Sea World obviously just needed a cover up story so the wale, let alone the industry would have bad rep for it.

The last piece of stock footage that had an emotional appeal is when the trainer, John Hargrove got harassed by the orca and got pulled down all the way to the bottom of the pool. He was held down there with no oxygen supply for several minutes at a time, then brought back up for air, then pulled right back down by the orca. Sea world lied on this accident also. They stated that he had got scratched on the face while the wale did hat to him.

Interviews

There are many interviews that were filmed in Blackfish, a good portion of those interviews were by witnesses that saw the accidents and families of the injured trainer. Sea World proclaims that one of the trainers dies because he had been inexperienced. That is a lie because there were stock footage of this so called "inexperienced" trainer training like he had been doing this for years.

Another example of interviews proving Sea World is a fraud is when trainers from Sea World got asked about Dawns death. The stated that Sea World just blamed Dawns ponytail for her death. The trainers that were interviewed stated that they themselves have trained with a pony tail with no problem. They saw the accident and knew that the wale didn't pull her ponytail.

The last interview was filmed by the family of the trainer who died. When the family saw the footage of the attack they were devastated. This should make the audience mad and sad at the fact that the family of the trainer didn't even know the full and true story.
