Timberwolves Weekly
February 28, 2020
In a previous newsletter, we shared this year’s parent survey results. At the next PTO meeting (Tuesday, March 3 at 4:30), we will ask for more feedback from parents regarding why we were highly scored in some areas and how we could improve some of our lower scoring areas. Everyone is invited to be part of this discussion. Also, immediately after the PTO meeting (5:30), we will have an 8th grade parent meeting for anyone interested in planning our end of year celebration for our 8th graders.
Remember that our Parent Teacher Conferences, Book Fair, and Ice Cream Social are going on tonight, February 27th, from 3:45 to 7:30. Hope to see you there!
With Gratitude,
Mrs. Linda O'Bryan & Mr. John McEwing

ADHD--The Ins and Outs: by your School Psychologist
ADHD is one of the most frequently diagnosed conditions in school aged children. There are three types of ADHD, including ADHD-Hyperactive/Impulsive, ADHD-Inattentive (what used to be called ADD), and ADHD-Combined (symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention). Each person with ADHD has their own unique presentation of characteristics--but what we as parents and educators probably most often recognize are the challenges that come with a diagnosis of ADHD. Those who have ADHD are more likely to have comorbid (co-occurring) conditions of anxiety, depression, learning difficulties, low self esteem, and increased likelihood to engage in risky behaviors, to name a few. It’s hard not to get caught up in all of the possible struggles our children with ADHD have now and can experience later. I read this great article linked here on the 14 benefits of ADHD. It was such a good reminder that even though individuals with ADHD will and can struggle, we have to celebrate how ADHD can positively influence a child’s functioning. Dr. Welby outlined the following strengths and positive traits of ADHD (please read her article to learn more about each trait):
Resilience
Creativity
Perceptive
Adaptability
Expression of emotion
Impulsivity (yes this can be a good thing)
Humorous
Empathy and compassion
Multi-tasking skills
Spontaneity
Drive and Passion
Curiosity
Enthusiasm and bright thinking
Authenticity and honesty
If you have a child with ADHD, please take a moment to reflect with your young one what makes her/him/them strong, positive contributors to their school and home communities. Hearing what their strengths are, acknowledging them, and being proud of them will support emotional and social well-being.
Attendance
Please provide written documentation from the doctor when your child is absent from school for an appointment. If a provider recommends that a child miss future days of school, please provide specific, written documentation from the provider stating that information.
If you have questions about keeping your child sick or taking your child to their healthcare provider, please see the following documents from our district nurse:
When To See Healthcare Provider
Please reach out to Amanda Rosman, School Social Worker, if there are extenuating circumstances impacting your child’s attendance. amanda.rosman@muskegonorway.org 262-971-1820 x7428
Academic and Career Planning
ACP is intended to equip students and their families with the tools necessary to make more informed choices about post-secondary education and training as it leads to careers.
XELLO, Our Online Career Research Program
XELLO is the new online career research program that Muskego Norway Schools is using with students in grades 6-12. The program is designed to help your student prepare for academic, career and future success.
Your child will be utilizing the XELLO online program in their sixth grade Dollars and Sense class and in their seventh and eighth grade Social Studies classes. Through career exploration in XELLO, students will begin to define their interests, skills, preferences and aspirations to further explore career opportunities available in their future.
As a parent/guardian, you are encouraged to explore XELLO with your student by logging in together. Please ask your student to share with you what they have learned once they have logged in to complete their assessments.
