What is a learning scale?
“What is most important is that teaching is visible to the student and that the learning is visible to the teacher.”
Hattie, 2009
Why do we need learning scales?
How are learning scales different from rubrics?
How do learning scales empower the learner?
Writing a Learning Scale
1. You will need at least ONE learning scale per unit. Scales should be written by unit.
2. Some units will have more than one scale. ELAR will have a reading scale, a writing scale, and possibly a word learning scale. Math may break the unit into 2 or more sections and write a scale for each section. For example, if the TEKS SE says "addition and subtraction" you might make an addition scale and a subtraction scale.
3. Essential targets written by unpacking the standard are placed at level 3.0 (not 4.0).
4. Any concepts, ideas, or definitional knowledge goes on the 2.0 level.
5. Any basic processes that are needed to support the essential knowledge and scales are placed on the 2.0 level.
