HVHS Term 2, Week 4
Newsletter - 27 May 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou
The chill of winter has finally reached us - we have been so lucky to have had relatively settled weather that has meant ventilation is easy. The winter months may see a need to increase mask-wearing in some classrooms, especially those that face the southerly winds. We do ask that students have masks in their bags ready to wear if requested by a teacher.
Winter sports are well underway. Our Premier netball team has made a fantastic start to their season, securing their highest place ever in the annual Wellington Secondary School Tournament. Thanks to the volunteer coaches, managers, and sideline supporters of sport at HVHS. I’ve enjoyed meeting you all as I pop in to watch various games.
We are incredibly hopeful that we will see teacher Eric Speakman wearing the NZ Black singlet in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in late July. He is following in the footsteps of former HVHS student Nick Willis. We wish him all the very best in meeting the qualifying mark in the coming weeks. Do watch out for his story on TVOne news soon.
Our Gifted and Talented Programme, coordinated by Rob Everett - Deputy Principal and Rebecca Feerick - G&T Coordinator, has been refreshed. The school G&T website has a wealth of information on our numerous programmes—link to the G&T website. Rebecca and Rob are developing a new mentoring programme and restarting our Sports Excellence Programme this term. There will be many other exciting activities and opportunities coming.
One of our very gifted musicians, Jaxson Cook, has won a cash scholarship from the Music Awards, and tonight his original song has been selected for performance with Wellington Orchestra. Jaxson will sing his song accompanied by the Orchestra tonight at Taita's Walter Nash Stadium at 7.00 pm.
Here is another clever group completing an internal assessment and helping and serving our community. The gifted and talented opportunities at school are wide and varied.
“We are a group of five Year 12 Business students: Gemma Turner (CEO), Aisling Incledon (Finance), Alexa Van Blerk (Marketing), Emily Luke (Operations), Kairo Chankok (HR). We established a business called Brighter Learning for an internal assessment. At Brighter Learning, we believe that students attending primary schools deserve the best education possible. That is why we decided to help primary schools for our assessment. Our goal, as a group, is to provide underfunded local primary schools with materials essential to learning. We will be working with Wilford and Gracefield primary schools.
With funds collected from our Non-Uniform Day on 27 May at Hutt Valley High School, we will purchase the supplies considered most beneficial to the schools, as shown by the research that we carried out. To determine what would be most appreciated, we worked with teachers and students that attend and work at these schools. We have organised to work with staff at HVHS and a local printing business, BlueStar, to help us purchase and supply the products needed. Our group hopes that our service will benefit these schools by making a positive impact on students' and staffs' well-being and their aspects of learning.
Through our non-uniform day, we managed to raise over $1,000 which we’ll use to purchase supplies for Gracefield and Wilford Schools.”

Mechanical Engineering work placements
The Year 12 Mechanical Engineering students started their first placement at ATCO Steel Developments Ltd as a part of the Work Integrated Learning pathway scheme the Technology department is establishing with support from the Hutt Chamber of Commerce.
It allows students such as Camron Neilson, Damon Allen, Devon Barnes and Aren Coley first-hand experience using industrial tools and equipment to build on what they have learnt in the classroom. After which they get a Record of Achievement identifying their competence. These partnerships will enable us to streamline our teaching to integrate better into engineering apprenticeship schemes.
Congratulations
