From the Principal's Desk
Welcome back from an exciting and much needed holiday break! It is great to be back. To get back in the swing of things, we will spend time during the next few weeks reviewing and practicing classroom and school procedures of being respectful, responsible, and safe.
When considering school cancellations, the safety of all students in the district is the first consideration. School district personnel drive bus routes to check local conditions firsthand. District personnel then hold conversations with the bus transportation company to gain their perspective. Again, safety is always our top priority. We also consider whether conditions will be changing throughout the day.
In the event of a school cancellation, notice will be provided as soon as a decision is made. Local radio and television stations will be notified and a notice will be posted on the school district’s web page, Facebook, and Twitter. Notification will be sent via TextCaster Spartan Alerts as well which you can sign up for on our district webpage.
Early Dismissal: An early dismissal will be used when conditions are expected to get worse throughout the day. This option will be used sparingly and avoided whenever possible. If early dismissal becomes necessary, the district will announce and post dismissal times. The standard early dismissal schedule will be used when possible.
Late Start: A late start option will also be used sparingly and in cases in which conditions are expected to improve fairly quickly in the morning. If late start is utilized, the district will announce the length of the delay. For example, if there will be a 2 hour late start, you would add 2 hours to the typical school start time. In the example of a 2 hour late start, if your child has a 7:30 bus stop time, the new bus stop time would be 9:30. The standard late start schedule will be used when possible.

Does your child confuse the lower-case letters “b” and “d” when read-ing or writing? Many beginning readers and writers find it difficult to distinguish between these very similar letters. Here are a few ways to help your child..
· For helping with “b,” draw a capital B first, then in a different color, draw the lowercase “b” over the top of the capital B.
· A way to focus on the “d” is to think of the letter “c” coming right before the “d” in the alphabet. Have your child make the “c” and then add “l” to it. (c + l = d and “d” is after “c” in the alphabet).
· Another popular visual is to write the word “bed” and picture the word looking like a bed. If your child knows the sound for each letter, they can think about the sounds while reading the word and will be able to tell which sound is said first.
· You can find many “visuals” to print display at your home by looking on Pinterest! Just type in b/d confusion!
Focus on just ONE letter (b or d) and really stress that one for a while. For instance, have your child write a line of “b’s”, saying the name of the letter every day for several weeks. Working on both letters tends to add to the confusion.
