P-TECH Opportunity
We will be offering three in-person informational sessions for current 8th grade students and families interested in P-TECH 535 for the 2021-2022 school year. The flyer below will be sent electronically next week to all 8th grade families.
Darren Saner, P-TECH counselor, has been in communication with 8th grade English teachers about sharing program information with students through Google Classrooms.
Quick review on P-TECH & background:
- P-TECH is a program founded by IBM in partnership with schools.
- The goal of P-TECH is to reach historically underrepresented students (in higher education and specific workforce industries) by providing a pathway to the career while in high school.
- P-TECH 535 will serve 50-60 students in one of two pathways: Practical Nursing and Information Technology. Students will have up to six years to complete the courses/credits needed their chosen pathway degree (diploma in Practical Nursing to be eligible for the Licensed Practical Nurse—LPN—certification or an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Information Technology).
- Rochester Public Schools is partnering with RCTC, IBM and Mayo Clinic to provide industry mentors, workplace experiences, and career and academic supports for students.
- Students will still take courses at their “home” high schools, but will take some P-TECH specific courses with their pathway cohorts in their freshmen and sophomore years and will take the bulk of their degree courses at RCTC in their junior and senior years.
John Adams Middle School Counselors
John Adams counselors are available to help meet students’ academic, social, and emotional needs during distance learning. Counselors are best reached through email and are available to connect through email, phone, Google Meet, or scheduled in-person appointments. Below is their contact information and HERE is a link to their website that provides resources for students and parents.
Students are being asked to fill out a survey to gauge student need to meet with his/her counselor on an individual or group basis. Counselors will try to pull students for individual meetings during non-academic time (ie. Target, after/before advisory, lunch). Groups will be run during the lunch period on a weekly basis. Based on student response, counselors plan to run groups on the topics of: grief, distance learning support, anxiety, racism and injustice, and mentorship (8th graders only).
