Winter Celebrations Around the World
Doesn't it feel like our world has gotten smaller? Connecting with other continents is so easy thanks to the World Wide Web and various other technologies. This is a great time to research and discuss with your children, of all ages, the various winter celebrations that happen around our world. Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas, Kwanzaa, American New Year's Day, Three Kings Day, and Chinese New Year are some of the popular winter celebrations. Go to National Geographic Kids for more ideas, games, and fun family activities.

Family Specialist Spotlight
Ruby Lopez Morris joined NEISD in 2002, as a Dual Language Teacher at Colonial Hills. She had great rapport with her students and was a natural at engaging the parents of her students. Administration urged her to consider the Family Specialist position in 2008 and although she was hesitant to leave her position as a teacher, she now believes it was the best decision she ever made. Wood Middle School has been her home for the past 10 years. Her hope is that all parents and guardians feel empowered, not only in their journey to raise great children but also in their personal journey to better themselves and be involved in their community. She has worked hard in ensuring that her families have the tools and connections to resources. Ruby was born and raised in Midland, Texas and moved to San Antonio in 2002. She received her Master of Arts in Bicultural-Bilingual Studies from UTSA. Her professional growth is to understand children: factors that affect their learning, their behavior and their well-being. It is something she is passionate about and hopes to bring much needed awareness. Ruby's daughter graduated this past May from UTSA. They both enjoy trying out new restaurants, the theatre and spending time with their pets. The Wood Middle School families and community are fortunate to have Ms. Morris!
