Prendiville Catholic College
17 November 2017
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Our Annual Awards and Presentation Evening is a chance to honour excellence at Prendiville Catholic College. At our College we must be very sure what we see as excellence. In my address at the Awards night I shared the following description of excellence as I understand for Prendiville Catholic College:
Excellence at Prendiville Catholic College is about being the very best we can be in our relationships and in all the activities and endeavours we undertake. This is the culture we want permeating our corridors and classrooms. By practising excellence, you can bring your gifts to fruition. The College endeavours to provide opportunities for every learner so each has the best possible chance to excel.
Excellence at Prendiville is within everyone’s reach if we challenge ourselves to aspire to be our very best. This year we have focused particularly on our HEART and defined by our actions inspired by the letters of the word HEART……helping others, encouraging others, acting kindly, representing with pride, trying our best and yes….we also demonstrate excellence when we tie our hair back and tuck our shirts in. Excellence is found in little and big things - it is a journey of reflection not a destination to reach. Congratulations to the following award winners for 2018.
Redmond Prendiville Award
The words Lead, Serve, Inspire are used to describe our graduate profile or what we refer to affectionately as being ‘Prendivillian’. A ‘Prendivillian’ is described as someone who serves with pride, leads with confidence and inspires to impact others positively. They are people who display integrity, service and dependability. Each Prendivillian enriches the lives of others and inspire our community in a positive way seeking personal excellence across the physical, spiritual, cultural and academic aspects of College life. The Redmond Prendiville Award is the College’s highest honour and recognises the student or students who have displayed exemplary Prendivillian qualities. This year two Redmond Prendiville awards have been awarded. Congratulations to Amy Groenewegen and Bailey Porro.
Congratulations Cris Macaraig our Academic Dux, Runner Up Dux Dylan Burwood and Byron Reid our number one VET student. These are the highest academic honours we recognise at the College and we hold these winners in the highest esteem.
Spirit of Prendiville Awards
The Spirit of Prendiville awards are presented to students who are nominated for the Redmond Prendiville Award.

PRENDIVILLE GALLERY OPENING
The long awaited official opening on Friday 3rd November by Mrs Genevie Baker, CEWA Coordinator of the Arts and VET courses K-12. Close to 100 people were in attendance including Dr Debra Sayce, Acting Executive Director of Catholic Education in Western Australia, Ms Emily Jackson, MLA for Joondalup, Principal Mr Mark Antulov and Mr Kevin Peterson, Chairman of the School Board.
Thanks to all who attended and for making it such a successful night. Students from the FlexEd program exhibited their work and many prized gifts were purchased, ranging from woodwork cutting boards, jewellery, kiln fired glass and amazing sculptures. Students from the Special Education Centre also displayed gift cards and food preserves made by the 'Endeavour Products' business team.
The Gallery is now open from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm daily until the end of the school term. Feel free to come in and purchase a unique hand-made gift for Christmas. Changes to opening hours will be updated via Prendiville Facebook page and the TIDE Instagram account. (www.instagram.com/tideprendiville/)
A personal reflection by Adam Morris. Year 11 FlexEd student.
On Friday 3rd November the Prendiville Gallery was opened. I was the Master of Ceremonies for the night. I introduced many special guests and this was a new learning curve for me. My parents were there and they thought it was an amazing night.
Jayden Pethick and I built a sculpture made from glass, wood and concrete as part of the FlexEd program. It was our signature piece with our names on a plaque and it sold on the opening night!
There were many products in the gallery made from different materials such as wood, glass and silver. I thought it went really well and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
YEAR 7 SCIENCE CLUB ANNUAL NIGHT BUSHWALK
The annual night bush walk at Star Swamp in North Perth for the Year 7 Science club members was held on 7 November and was another fantastic night. The balmy warm night allowed the group to enjoy the sounds and sights of the Australian bush. Students learnt about the various communities in this urban bushland with its number of different species of Gum trees, ancient Zamia Palms and many other plant species. A highlight was seeing a Tawny Frogmouth Owl who came along and perched right near us.
The night is also now famous for the students to sight the legendary resident bushman, who ended up getting chased into the bush by the group. Hope he is okay!!
A special thanks to all the science staff who came along and supported the night. Special thanks to Mrs Anita Relo-Fisher who drove the bus.

YEAR 7 HUMANITIES
The Year 7 students have been studying Ancient Egypt in Humanities. After a lesson investigating the steps involved in mummification, students in Ms Wolfe’s Humanities class had the chance to put their study into practice. The students were divided into pairs and were allocated 2 rolls of toilet paper and were not allowed sticky tape. The students needed to wrap each other as tightly as possible from head to foot. This was not as easy as it looked, with the paper often breaking or coming loose. The students enjoyed themselves thoroughly and the activity generated some interesting discussion about mummification and the skills that such a task would have involved in ancient times.
CYBER SECURITY
Bronwen Hyde (ICT Teacher) recently visited a Cyber Security information session at Edith Cowan University. Edith Cowan are conducting a new ‘Cyber Security in Schools’ program. The program is an initiative after the federal government recently provided funding to Edith Cowan to engage and encourage more people into studying Cyber Security and obtain a career in this field. ECU is recognised as one of Australia’s leading universities in the Cyber Security field.
As part of this program, Edith Cowan students who are currently studying a Masters in Cyber Security, visited Prendiville Catholic College last week, to deliver lessons on Cyber Security. Helen Connor (Media/ICT Teacher), Jessica Vaini (Media, Humanities, ICT Teacher) and Robyn Sady (ICT/ Business Teacher) participated in the trial program and the lessons were very engaging for the students and teachers. The ICT teaching staff are looking forward to having a long-term relationship with the ECU Computer Science faculty.
