Mr. Hape's Classroom Newsletter
February 5 - February 9
Odds & Ends
- No school on February 19th for President's Day.
- Information was sent out last week regarding the class party on Friday. Check your emails if you haven't seen it.
- Please be aware if your child is using messaging apps to communicate with other children after school. I am not going to mediate issues that occur among students at home. My suggestion is to delete an app if it causes problems. Thank you for your understanding.
Field Trip
We are planning a field trip to New Harmony for their annual Heritage Artisans Day. Our trip is scheduled for Friday, April 26. We will leave Oak Hill at 8:45 a.m. and return by 2:00 p.m. We are looking for parent volunteers to help us on the trip. You would need to drive yourself and the cost is $10 for adults. Any parent attending will need an EVSC background check.
We know this is pretty far in advance but we want to give everyone a chance to get the background check and arrange to take off from work if needed. We will need to know by Friday, March 15 if you are planning to attend. More information for the students will follow as we get closer to the date of our trip.
Learning for this Week
Social Studies
We still have a little more labeling to do on our maps. They will certainly come home this week.
Reading & Writing
Students are learning to gather information and write an informational paragraph. The paragraph has a topic sentence, details on the topic, and a closing sentence. The question we will try to answer with this week's paragraph is, "Why is the glass frog so hard to see?"
We will also continue working with text features, verb tenses (past, present, future), and reading comprehension.
Homework: silent reading for 15-20 minutes when possible
Math
Students will have a test Monday over area & perimeter. With so many students out sick the past few weeks, I went ahead and did all their review homework with them here at school. There are two things they must remember to do well on this test that you may want to review with them:
- To find the perimeter of a rectangle, add together the length of all 4 sides.
- To find the area of a rectangle, multiply the length x width.
The rest of the week will start our unit on fractions.
Homework: Continue to memorize multiplication facts.
