PCHS PARENT News

From the Principal's Desk
PCHS Pirates are into the 2nd full week of classes, and it is amazing to see all the great work taking place in our classrooms. Students are getting to know their teachers and peers; they are working collaboratively; and being creative in their ventures. Our Jazz Band is being innovative by developing their own branding for their group. The Pride Band drum majors are working with Dr. Jones on their leadership skills as a collaborative group. The Pirateer Yearbook staff was recently recognized at the national level for exceeding high expectations from their publishing company for their outstanding development of the 2018 Pirateer yearbook. Students from Spanish I & II courses developed videos to encourage others to take a foreign language. It is inspiring to serve every day in a building with such great students and staff. We are truly off to a great year!

Professional Learning Community (PLC) Days
Professional Learning Community: Time Designed to Improve Student Achievement; Next PLC Early Release - September 12.
On Wednesday, August 29, students were released two hours early for Platte County School District's first Professional Learning Community (PLC) day of the 2018-19 school year. PLC days are designed to establish sustained and uninterrupted time for educators to work together and collaborate. Collaboration is an essential ingredient for continuous school improvement and staff development. Both of these are directly related to student achievement. This time allows educators to examine and respond to the four basic fundamental questions of a Professional Learning Community:
- What is it we want students to learn?
- How will we know when each student has achieved the learning?
- How will we respond when a student is not learning?
- How will we respond when we know a child has mastered the learning?
Pirate Presence - September is "Attendance Awareness Month"
Platte County High School is looking forward to seeing each student every day of the school year. We know and believe that when students are present at school they have more opportunities to experience success both academically, in their extra-curricular activities as well as develop caring relationships with peers and staff.
As we start the school year, we want to introduce students, families and community members to our Pirate Presence attendance campaign. Our goal is that our students will be in attendance every day, but especially want to make sure students have a 93% attendance rate or higher for the entire year. The entire PCHS staff will be working with students to help meet this goal. As family members, we need your help as well! Please help our Pirates be present every day! #PiratePresence - follow link for more information about Pirate Presence.

Counseling Department
SURVEY:
In order to meet both the Missouri Comprehensive Counseling and Missouri School Improvement Program guidelines, the PCHS Counseling Department conducts a school counseling survey periodically. The results of this survey help us to plan our counseling program around themes identified as important by students, parents, and staff. This survey will help us determine the needs of the students individually as well as which topics we need to address in the classroom and small group sessions. Please provide your feedback by September 7. Thank you!
SUCCESS READY OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS:
Our counselors have created a document where they will be listing (and trying to keep updated) all events and opportunities they get for students. It is located on the Counseling Webpage and linked below. Save the link and access it often to see what opportunities there are for the students.
Example of what is listed in this document:
ACT Prep
ACT workshop with Lenora Miles. Please see registration form for dates and cost on the PCHS counseling website.

Homecoming 2018 Festivities: September 17-21
Platte County's Homecoming festivities run September 17-21. This year's theme is "Platte COUNTRY Homecoming 2018" - a country theme. Click here for all of the week's spirit days and festivities.
PCHS will host the Victory Supper on Wednesday, September 19, starting at 6 p.m. at Pirate Stadium. The Victory Supper will be a community pep rally with our coaches introducing the fall teams, alumni coming back to speak, and the crowning of the underclassmen candidates and the Homecoming King. This evening will also feature performances by the PCHS drumline, PCHS cheerleaders, as well as alumni cheerleaders. PCHS cheerleading alumni are asked to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for a short practice. Food will also be provided, and the event is open to the community.
The Homecoming Parade will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 21, and will run on Fourth Street from Thomas Drive to the former Rising Star Elementary. Students will be dismissed three hours early that day. Parents and the community are encouraged to arrive by 2:25 p.m. as Fourth Street between Zed Martin and Thomas Drive will be closed to traffic beginning at 2:30 p.m. Thomas Drive between Siegrist Elementary and Fourth Street will also be closed. If you'd like to participate in the parade, please contact Kyle Perkins or Gena Puckett for an entry form by September 19. AGAIN THIS YEAR: There will be a shuttle bus to take parade participants and their sponsors back to the main PCR-3 campus. The shuttle bus will be parked along Zed Martin Drive. Floats will disband in the Rising Star Elementary parking lot and will take the path from the Rising Star playground to Zed Martin Drive. We encourage parents to pick up their participants at the PCR-3 main campus.
Immediately following the parade, on the Platte County Courthouse steps, the Traditions Band will perform several pieces including the Platte County "Fight Song" to get in the Homecoming spirit. Wells Bank will also be hosting its annual Community Tailgate Party, which will feature a PCR-3 Voice Competition following the parade in the parking lot of the High Pointe Shops Shopping Center. Come cheer on your favorite faculty as they sing their way to stardom, and enjoy free food and drinks!
Homecoming Football Game: The Pirates will take on the Raytown South Cardinals at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 21 at Pirate Stadium. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned at halftime.

Saturday, September 15th! You'll find us and some fancy Ford cars in the parking lot in front of the Paxton Center building.
Bullying and Safety Concerns
Safety is one of our district’s top priorities and to help safeguard our school community, our district is now using SafeSchools Alert, a tip reporting service that allows students, staff, and parents to submit safety concerns to our administration.
You and your child can easily report tips on bullying, harassment, or any safety issue you're concerned about through SafeSchools Alert.
Every tip SafeSchools Alert receives about our district is immediately logged in the system and our administration is notified so that they can investigate and take appropriate action. And, tips may also be submitted anonymously if you prefer.
Together, using SafeSchools Alert, we can make our district a safer place to learn!
