Accessing Your Child's Grades and Why It Matters
Last month, your child received their first report card of the year. How did your child perform? If you didn’t see the report card, and you are wondering if it is buried in your child’s backpack, or hidden in his desk, let me assure you that it is not in either one of those locations! The report card is on Skyward, Boerne’s online system.
Having an online system for grading provides a lot of benefits to parents and educators. First, it’s a very “green” process and saves thousands of pieces of papers annually. Additionally, parents can see their child’s grades daily, not just when report cards are prepared.
However, if you are not using Skyward, you are probably unaware of your child’s academic progress. This is concerning. Why? Research shows that parents who show interest in their child’s academic progress, the information they are learning, and the goals they are achieving have students who are more successful in school.
Please review your child’s grades regularly (or at least each 9 weeks). Contact your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns, and let your child know you are paying attention.
If you need assistance with Skyward or would prefer a paper copy of your child’s report card each 9 weeks, contact our office. We are always happy to assist you!

Zones of Self-Management
As part of our Social and Emotional district-wide Great initiative CCES will be implementing the “Zones of Self-Management. This program is designed to teach students how to identify and self-regulate their feelings in appropriate ways. Students are taught that each feeling goes into a particular “zone”. The “zones” are as follows:
Green Zone: Ready to learn, happy, content. Working with a clear mind and purpose
Red Zone: Angry, mad, frustrated. May say things you do not mean/regret
Yellow Zone: Hyper, silly, excited, anxious. May have a difficult time controlling your body, may take away from your learning and the learning of others
Blue Zone: Sad, bored, hungry, tired. May lack motivation
Once students can identify their “zone” they are taught and given the tools to self-regulate these feelings. For example, if a student feels he/she is in the “blue zone”, the teacher may ask him/her to get a drink of water or take a walk to “wake up” their body. On the other hand, should a student be in the “red zone”, the teacher may ask that student to go to the calming corner of the classroom and take deep breathes to calm his or her body. Students are taught to use tools when in various zones to help them get into the “green zone”, where they are the most ready to learn and be successful at school.
In addition to managing their “zones”, as part of this program, students will also gain an increased vocabulary of emotional terms, skills to identify other people’s body language and feelings, as well as, calming and alerting techniques.
You can also work towards using and supporting this program at home. Here a few simple ways to incorporate some of these techniques with your child:
- Use the “zones” language at home. For example, “I notice you are in the Blue Zone. What is your plan for moving to the Green Zone?” Or “The Yellow Zone is great for playing outside, but right now we are getting ready for dinner. Can you tell me what zone would be a better match for getting ready for dinner?”
- Share with your child how his or her behavior is affecting your zone and how you are feeling.
- Ask questions about their “zones” and allow your child to share their strategies with you.
As always, should you have any questions regarding this program or ideas on
how to support at home, please contact Mrs. Zuniga, CCES Elementary School Counselor
