Description of Solar Energy

  • Solar energy is rays of sunlight that reach the Earth. This energy can be turned into different forms of energy like heat and electricity.

Renewable or Norenewable

  • Solar energy is a renewable energy because it is reusable, which means you can use it whenever you want, as long as the sun is out.

Brief History

  • Energy from the Sun has been used on Earth for millions of years.
  • In the 1830s a British Astronomer named John Herschel is very famous because he used a Thermal Solar Collector to cook his food while he was exploring In Africa.

Environmental Impact

  • Solar Thermal Power plants can harm desert ecosystems "if not managed"
  • Insects and birds could die if they fly into a fixed beam of sunlight
  • Some power plants could use underground wells for cleaning and cooling, which could affect the ecosystems

Major Uses

  • To heat homes an provide electricity
  • Used to heat fluids, which produces steam that is used to power generators
  • Can be used to charge calulators, and watch batteries
  • Used to heat swimming pools

Reasons Why You Should Use Solar Energy

  • Safe for the environment
  • It is renewable
  • Durable
  • Could save you a lot of money
  • Increases your homes value
