India Gains Independence
For nearly 200 years, India has been owned by the British. On August 15th, 1947, India, led by Gandhi had gained their independence. Also known as the partition of India. The Congress Party was India's national political party, which mostly consists of HIndus. The Muslim League formed which was a political party meaning to keep Muslim interests in India. They were led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and did not want India to be ruled by the HIndu dominant Congress Party.

Led India to independence. Assassinated by a Hindu extremist for trying to bring Muslims and Hindus together.

Led the Muslim League political party. Did not want India to be ruled by Hindu-dominant Congress Party.
Jawaharlal Hehru
Hehru was the first prime minister of India. Was part of the Congress Party.
Conflict Between Hindus and Muslims
After WWII, India finally became independent after being part of Britain for over two hundred years. Almost as soon as they got their independence, the Hindus and Muslims began to fight. Many people moved away to avoid violence. Gandhi was bringing peace between the Muslims and Hindus until a Hindu extremist shot Gandhi. He died on January 30th, 1948, in New Delhi, India. The violence continued.
Assassination of Indira Gandhi
In 1966, Jawaharlal Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi became the next prime minister. She was the third prime minister right after Gulzarilal Nanda. Gandhi was a central figure in the Indian Central Congress Party. She served from 1966 to 1977, then served again in 1980. On October 31st, 1984, Gandhi was assassinated. She was assassinated by two Sihk bodyguards. The Sihks wasnted their own nation.

Rajiv Gandhi.
Rajiv Gandhi was the son of Indira Gandhi, and became the prime minister after she had been assassinated in 1984. He was the youngest prime minister of India and served until May 21st, 1991 when he was assassinated. Rajiv was campaigning in Sriperumbuder when he was soon greeted by Dhanu. She bent down and detonated the bomb tucked under her dress. Along with Rajiv, and Dhanu, 14 others died as well. She was thought to be thought of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a separatist group from Sri Lanka. The assassination was caught of film by a local photographer. Unfortunately, the photographer had been killed by the blast.
