Unit 7- Sums and Minuends to 10
This unit bundles student expectations that address modeling, representing, and explaining strategies used to solve addition and subtraction problems involving sums and
minuends to 10. According to the Texas Education Agency, mathematical process standards including application, a problem-solving model, tools and techniques,
communication, representations, relationships, and justifications should be integrated (when applicable) with content knowledge and skills so that students are prepared to use
mathematics in everyday life, society, and the workplace.
Really focus on giving students word problems for them to act out in multiple ways. Students are not expected to read the word problems but they should be able to act it out on part-part-whole mats, ten frames, number sentences, NUMBER PATH etc. Make sure that they have manipulatives available to them during this time as well!
Performance Assessment
There is NOT a District PA for this unit, but you are still expected to complete a PA for each unit. Here is the PA for Unit 7:
For each situation, complete the following tasks:
- Create a concrete model to represent the solution to the problem.
- Record the solution to each problem using a pictorial model and a number sentence.
- Orally describe, explain, and justify the problem solving strategy or plan used to determine each solution.
- Orally justify the reasonableness of the solution.
- Trisha had a bracelet with 10 beads. The bracelet broke and 6 beads fell off. How many beads were still on the bracelet?
- Drake was playing a computer game. He scored 8 points in the first game and 0 points in the second game. How many points did Drake score in both games combined?
- The class earned 5 stickers for good behavior in the cafeteria at lunch time. They earned 2 stickers for good behavior in the library. How many stickers did the class earn altogether?
- There are 9 seeds in the birdfeeder. No birds came to the birdfeeder so none of the seeds were eaten. How many seeds are in the birdfeeder now?
In the resources section of Forethought I have attached a recording document for this PA and a Google Slides with each problem on it to help guide you through it if you want to do it whole class. I would encourage them to use their crayons to draw their pictures, especially for the last question.
I have also included a rubric to help you score.
