Basic Skills Required on Job

  • Need to know the film industry and movie production
  • Need to know how to edit equipment and you need to be willing to keep up with changes in that technology.
  • Need to know different camera angles, special effects and audio effects
  • Ability to work alone
  • Need to know how to remain calm when stressed
  • Willingness to work long hours
  • Flexibility with production delays
  • Need to work well with directors, cinematographers, etc.

Types of Activites

  • Assembling all raw footage
  • Inputting uncut rushes and sounds
  • Digitally cutting the files to put together the sequence of the film
  • Reordering and tweaking the content
  • Suggesting or selecting music
  • Writing voiceover/commentary

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

They usually work in studios or office settings. Film Editors usually sit for long periods of time and they use their hands to handle, control, or free objects, tools and controls.

Work Hours

They usually have a set schedule each work. But you could work long irregular hours to meet deadlines. They work about 40 hours a week.

Educational Requirements

You must have a bachelor's degree in a field related to film or broadcasting. You also must have an understanding of digital cameras and editing software.
