Project Based Learning And KET
Curating KET Resources to Inspire Project Based Learning
Project Based Learning and KET Resources
In this S'more you will find KET services and resources used in today's training.
(Note: S'more is a free web "flyer" creator. You can have your students use this web tool as one way of creating products that allow them to report out various aspects of their project modules.)
This presentation is not a primer on how to do project based learning. I am not currently a classroom teacher and so do not have the opportunity to implement projects with students. I do hope to serve as a clearinghouse of sorts to allow you to connect with great PBL resources that I have discovered on my own or with the help of other educators.
It is also most importantly, from my point of view, a way to discover the resources KET provides to help catalyze project based learning and examine how they can best be used.
Your presenter today is Larry Moore, the KET Education Consultant for the North Central Region of Kentucky. Here is my contact information:

KET Video Production Trainings/Media Labs and Video Project
KET can provide training in one aspect of PBL, and that is if it involves a video production component. KET Education Consultants (like me) can provide basic instruction in production planning, equipment usage including using iPads for production, shot selection and framing, production crew roles and career information, etc.
KET also has a media lab at our Lexington studios where students and teachers can learn about basic video editing and green screen use plus have a tour of our studios.
KET also has a video project website where teachers can upload students videos for sharing with other schools. Throughout the year video production themed "challenges" are issued by KET. Some past ones have been on topics such as Digital Citizenship and the environment. These are not contests but any school who enters a video into the current challenge will be put in a drawing to possibly win a production related prize package.
This link will take you to information about all of these KET services/resources.

PBL and Technology S'more from Eminence ELA Teacher: Jennifer Montgomery
As part of this training, I would like to introduce you to the work of a teacher from Eminence Ind. schools, Jennifer Montgomery who really is a PBL teacher and who has been trained in its implementation. I recently presented with her at a KET PD Day and am sharing her S'more with attached powerpoint here and will be referring to some of her materials during my presentation. Apple Challenge Based Learning Site
This is a very deep resource for anyone interested in teaching using the challenge based learning model which is a more real world subset of the overall project based model.

The page this link takes you to on the site is called "Key Components" and it lays out the definitions of these components through a series of videos. (You can also see this as one long video on the "About" page with the video thumnail that looks like the image here.
Here also are the components of a challenge based project in order: Essential Question-Challenge-Guiding Questions-Guiding Activities and Resources- Solutions.

What is Project Based Learning?
From the BIE website:
Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Essential Elements of PBL include:
- Significant Content - At its core, the project is focused on teaching students important knowledge and skills, derived from standards and key concepts at the heart of academic subjects.
- 21st century competencies - Students build competencies valuable for today’s world, such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity/innovation, which are explicitly taught and assessed.
- In-Depth Inquiry - Students are engaged in an extended, rigorous process of asking questions, using resources, and developing answers.
- Driving Question - Project work is focused by an open-ended question that students understand and find intriguing, which captures their task or frames their exploration.
- Need to Know - Students see the need to gain knowledge, understand concepts, and apply skills in order to answer the Driving Question and create project products, beginning with an Entry Event that generates interest and curiosity.
- Voice and Choice - Students are allowed to make some choices about the products to be created, how they work, and how they use their time, guided by the teacher and depending on age level and PBL experience.
- Critique and Revision - The project includes processes for students to give and receive feedback on the quality of their work, leading them to make revisions or conduct further inquiry.
- Public Audience - Students present their work to other people, beyond their classmates and teacher.
iEarn
iEarn is a network of school sites around the world that allows classes to Join other interactive curriculum-based groups in which students are creating, researching, sharing opinions, and becoming global citizens. In other words this is a great site for any teacher who would like to conduct a challenge based project that has international scope.
A PBL Guide- Work That Matters: The Teacher's Guide to Project Based Learning
This guide is a partnership between schools in California and Great Britain. It says that three things you see in all project based learning is:
- multiple drafts
- Critiques- (can be peer and/or professional)
- Public Exhibition
It goes on to lay out the steps in a project as follows:
1. Get an idea
2. Design the project
3. Tune the project
4. Do the project
5. Exhibit the project

Discovery Webinar series on Project/challenge based learning
This is an archived set of three webinars from a few years ago on Project Based Learning presented through Discovery Education's DEN (Discovery Educators Network) by Ed. Tech. teacher, Jen Dorman. This was done as part of the Discovery Ed. Summer School project.

Discovery Education Board Builder Example
Board Builder is the cool new "electronic poster" creator which works much like the web tool Glogster but is embedded within the Discovery Ed. services. Both students and teachers can create these boards and once created they can be searched for by DE users. Teachers approve and determine the sharing level for their student's boards. Here is a link to a teacher created board. http://app.discoveryeducation.com/builders/boards/assetGuid/FB9869F8-B4E0-388B-C3CA-6C7617C03F73/includeHeader/true/layout/default
