Art Class Update:
First grade: Our latest focus has been on warm and cool colors. We finished our winter landscape collage and have started looking at the art of Pablo Picasso's Rose period. We are painting with the colors similar to those Picasso used in his Rose period and discussing how this is different from his Blue period.
Second grade: We have been exploring types of texture used in art, and creating a collage. Our first layer is texture rubbings we made. The second layer was animal skin printed paper. Both of these are types of implied (or visual) texture. The final layer will be adding pieces with real (or tactile) texture, such as fabric and yarn.
Third grade: After finally finishing our fall landscape painting (whew!), we have moved on to creating mandalas. Our focus is creating a piece that uses radial symmetry. We measured with rulers and used compasses to draw as perfect of a circle as possible. Then the creative part was adding their designs keeping radial symmetry in mind.
Fourth grade: Almost everyone is done with their Kimmy Cantrell mask. We began looking at the artist Jae Yong Kim who creates realistic donuts in ceramics. He also does drawings of his work and we are drawing a donut and will learn how to apply color using shading and blending techniques. Clay donuts will be made soon!

Notes from the Music Room
Our 4th graders are busy reviewing notes and fingerings for recorders. They are playing with partners and reviewing their C-sheets and preparing to be in groups. They are reading notes, playing them on recorders, improvising pieces, and soon will be accompanying their fellow students on Mallet instruments, such as xylophones.
3rd graders are learning how to play recorders by learning fingerings for different notes, and are beginning to read the music notes B, A, and G and playing them from sheets with different songs and exercises. They will be put into groups, according to their abilities, and they will progress at their own rates. We are looking for growth! Thanks to our generous PTO for providing all of our students with recorders!
Our 2nd grade students are learning songs from their musical called "The Principal and the Pea," based on the old fairy tale classic " The Princess and the Pea" (or The Real Princess.)
The musical will be learned in music class, and will be presented on Wednesday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m. Please put this on your calendars! The entire 2nd grade will be in the musical and each class will appear on stage to perform one the of the songs. We look forward to performing for you!
1st grade has been learning about a special composer, Camille Saint Saens, and his composition "The Carnival of the Animals." The children are learning about different instrument sounds, as well as being able to identify different "animals" at the carnival by the tempo, instruments, and specific melody lines. Ask your children about some of the animals they have "heard" in music class!
Our choir continues to meet on Wednesday
mornings, (with occasional Thursdays) preparing for our March 22nd Spring Concert. Please put this 7:00 p.m. program on your calendars, as you will not want to miss our last concert! Our theme this year is how our students can make a difference in our world. What a wonderful choir we have this year!
