The Civil War

After the Civil War
The reconstruction was a plan established by Abraham Lincoln. He wanted to rebuild the south after the civil war destroyed it. The reconstruction was from 1865 to 1877. After Lincoln was assassinated, President Johnson continued the reconstruction but in his own way. The things that followed the civil war were:
- The three Civil rights amendments.
- Black codes and their effects on African American.
- Discrimination against African Americans.
- Plans for reconstruction.
- Radical Republicans.
The Three Civil Rights Amendments
The 13th Amendment: States that slavery is illegal in all of the United States Of America.
The 14th Amendment: States that all people that were born in the U.S.A, including African Americans, were counted as natural citizens.
The 15th Amendment: Protected Black citizens rights to vote.
The Black Codes
The black codes were used to keep African Americans in line and to keep them on rules. They were no different from the rules that they had when they were slaves. They did not like them very much because it felt like they were slaves still. They still had very little rights.
Discrimination against African Americans
After the emancipation proclamation people still did not treat African Americans fairly. They did everything possible to make sure they did not have rights. They put in effect a law that said if you could not read or write or pay a fine you could not vote. They only enforced it on African Americans. They let it slide for poor whites. A lot of people threatened them if they voted such as the Kue Klux Klan.
Plans for Reconstruction
The Plan for reconstruction had many plans for different people. President Lincoln came up with the 10% plan. He wanted to replace the " Majority Rule" with " Loyal Rule". He did not consult congress about the plan. He wanted to pardon all but the highest ranking military and civilian confederate officers. Also 10% of the voting population would take an oath of loyalty and established a government that would be recognized. President Johnson's plan was called the 10% + plan. He offered amnesty upon simple oath to all except Confederate civil and military officers and those with property over $20,000. They also had to pay off debts. The congress had a different plan also. It was called the Radical Reconstruction.
