What's Happening In NBES
In art class this week students worked on adding in the little details to make their self image more interesting. In music class, the students focused on reviewing the main genres of music. Grade 4 students reflected on summarizing events from the weekend and sharing back main highlights from the reading of the day. In PE, students reviewed the rules of the gym, rode on scooter boards, and talked about the "Superstar of the day". In third grade students visited the library and started choosing books that are just right for them and worked with math attribute manipulatives to form the number 10. In second grade, students worked with number lines and made amazing predictions using the pictures of the story to build anticipation. In kindergarten, I had the chance to read one of my favorite stories to the children. I also had a chance to chat during snack and participate in counting the vowel letters in our names to develop a graph. In fifth grade, students worked in a Daily 5 rotation and I was able to gather a nice list of recommended books that are must reads, looked for interesting words while they read and charted the words, and completed a math benchmark. In first grade, I had a chance to picture read with many students, watch the children build words with the short "a" sound, and we were also able to meet our high school buddies for the first time. In sixth grade, I was able to read and chat about books the kids were choosing and the reasons they chose them (really good recommendations on our school twitter page @nbesprincipal) and students worked together finding quotients, and working on the expanded form of a billion size number. The kids are working super hard despite the heat! Great work NBES!!!

Morning Academy
We have planned to have classes that run 40 minutes in length and last for 1 week. Each week students will take part in 1 of 4 different options. The academy will run from 7:30-8:10 everyday and all kids in grades 3-6 are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Blogging, history, science experimentation, and Kahn academy will be the first round of options. Students will be able to participate in all 4 sections.
This year our school band will be practicing during the morning academy, but the classes will not start until the following week.

Connecting with NBES
There are lots of adventures in learning happening at NBES and I want you to have a front row seat! As a parent I found I wanted an inside scoop into the inner working of my children's school. I was consistently met with the answer to the standard how was school today? What did you do? The response was generally, "Nothing much we read and did math." I wanted more than that. Having this problem as a parent, I knew that many parents were in my shoes and I wanted to give them a front row seat!
