Anchored4Life Comes to Red Mill

In partnership with the US Navy, the Trevor Romain Company, and a generous grant, Virginia Beach City Public Schools is beginning to incorporate Anchored4Life resources into several Virginia Beach elementary schools. We are fortunate enough to be one of them. The mission of Anchored4Life is to help students become resilient, confident, and resourceful, to create a better world for themselves and others. While Anchored4Life was originally designed as a transition and resiliency program for military children, the resources and opportunities are accessible by all Red Mill students. Components of the program include resources to help students through various transitions in life, student-led activity groups to build students' resiliency, and leadership development.

National School Lunch Week

National School Lunch Week is October 9th-October 13th. This year’s theme is “School Lunch: Recipe for Success.” National School Lunch Week was designed to help schools tell their school lunch story and highlight the ingredients that make school lunch menus special...from local food and farmers to salad bars to the behind-the-scenes teamwork that makes every tray of food possible. We invite you to come have lunch with your child during this week. If you are able to join us, please return the attached flyer by Friday, October 6th.

Red Mill's Homework Policy

We realize that most of our students at Red Mill are involved in numerous extracurricular activities which offer a multitude of benefits to the social-emotional development of children. We want our students to enjoy these activities as well as quality family time, and we do not want homework to be a source of stress at home. However, we do want to make sure we are also preparing our students for the demands of middle school. As a faculty, we have reviewed the research and discussed our beliefs about homework. We believe in assigning short, meaningful homework assignments that are designed to help students do one of the following: practice previously-taught skills, develop study skills, extend students’ learning, or spark students’ interests in upcoming topics. Therefore, we will implement the following guidelines for homework at Red Mill. In kindergarten through 2nd grade, students are expected to read nightly. Parents are also provided with a list/calendar of suggested activities to do with their child based on objectives currently being taught to help keep families informed of their child’s learning. In 3rd through 5th grade, students are expected to read nightly. In addition, math homework will be given as needed. Students are also expected to review content (science, social studies, math) notes in order to start developing effective study habits for middle school. If you have questions regarding your child’s homework assignments and how you can support your child, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher. Additional information regarding homework in Virginia Beach Schools can be found in School Board Regulation 6-54.1

Marking Period Awards

We will once again recognize our students accomplishments each marking period with the following awards.

 Distinguished Dolphin will be awarded to students in Grades 1 through 5 who display good behavior, work habits, and teamwork. To earn Distinguished Dolphin, students must earn “Proficient” marks for each objective under Productivity, Collaboration & Participation, and Citizenship. Students must also earn an “Advanced Proficient” mark on at least one objective under each of those three categories.

 “Goal-Getter” Award is available to students in Grades 3-5. Each marking period, students will set an individualized academic goal for both language arts and math and work to reach their goal during the marking period. Students who accomplish their goal will receive the “Goal-Getter Award.”

 Attendance Award will be awarded to students in grades 1 through 5 displaying excellent attendance. Recognizing that sicknesses are unavoidable, students are able to miss one day of school each marking period and still receive the attendance award. Also, recognizing the importance of students being in school on time and for the entire school day, tardies and early releases will be taken into consideration for this award. A combination of 3 tardies and/or early releases in one marking period is equivalent to one day absent. Once a student has reached 2 days absent in a marking period, they will not be eligible for the award during that marking period.

Students receiving these awards will receive a brag tag or bead to add to their brag tag chain. Additionally, the award will be indicated on their printed report card. Marking
