BUE Newsletter for Online Learners
August 28, 2020
From the Principals
Dear BUE Families of Online Learners,
We have partnered with Colorado Digital Learning Solutions (CDLS) to provide online instruction for all students at BUE. We are excited for this partnership as their platform appears to be easy to use and will hopefully solve some of the issues we had last spring when we did online learning during the Stay at Home order issued by Governor Polis.
BUE students who are enrolled for online learning with CDLS are still BUE students. They have access to BUE Chromebooks and tech support and must follow all Garfield16 policies for responsible use of technology. Students and parents will be required to sign a form stating they will follow district technology policies when they pick up Chromebooks from BUE. Also, families will have the option to purchase Chromebook insurance for $35. All forms will be available and staff members will be present to answer any questions during Chromebook pickup.
Chromebook pickup will be September 1 to September 4, and will be according to last name.
- 9:30-11:30 a.m.: Students with last names A-L
- 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.: Students with last names M-Z
If these times do not work for you, please call the BUE office and we will schedule a time that does work for you.
More information about CDLS can be found on the CDLS website using this link. If someone from CDLS has not reached out to you by the time you pick up your Chromebook at BUE, please inform a BUE staff member and they will help you.
In the Frequently Asked Questions section below we will cover everything from logging on to attendance. Please do not hesitate to reach out if something is confusing or if you have any question. (970) 285-5703
We excited for our partnership with CDLS, however we look forward to when all students return to BUE for in-person learning.

Groups of Online Learning at BUE
There are 2 groups of online students at BUE.
Group 1: Students who have BUE teacher, Ms. Campbell, as their Online Teacher.
Group 2: Students will have a teacher who is not at BUE. If you do not have Ms. Campbell, your child will likely have one of the following teachers:
- Emily McComas
- Arlene Weis
- Kelley Hale
- Andi Weigel
- Sarah Hargadine
The Site Coordinator for both Group 1 and Group 2 is Mrs. Clark. Mrs. Clark can help answers, help you log in, provide you with a username, etc. If Mrs. Clark is not available, both Mrs. Shaffer and Mrs. Miles in the office can also help you.
When you come to pickup up your Chromebook you will be told if you are in Group 1 with Ms. Campbell or Group 2 with an off-site teacher. Both Group 1 and Group 2 will receive an information sheet with more information regarding your courses. If you have any questions, Chromebook pickup is a great time to get those answered.
Chromebook pickup will be September 1 to September 4, and will be according to last name.
- 9:30-11:30 a.m.: Students with last names A-L
- 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.: Students with last names M-Z

Online School Information
Students participating in CDLS are part of BUE and attendance matters! BUE students who are online learning will need to log into their math and literacy courses every school day, Tuesday through Friday. It does not matter when you log in, but you must log in to both math and literacy each day.
BUE will be able to see if you have logged in our not, and this is how we take attendance. If you only log in for 1 course, your attendance will be marked as 1/2 day. If you log in for both math and literacy, your attendance will be marked as 1 full day. Repeated partial attendance or lack of attendance will require a meeting with Mrs. Clark or Mrs. Frees to discuss attendance during online learning.
Please contact the BUE office if you have any questions. We will answer the questions we can, and find answers to any questions we do not immediately have an answer for. (970) 285-5703
Frequently Asked Questions
A: There is not an official 1st day of school for Online Learning. There is a window between September 1 and September 8, 2020 to log in and begin classes.
Q: What are online learning start and end times during the day?
A: This depends on your family's needs. You can do online learning any time of the day. Just remember that you must log in to both literacy and math each day, Tuesday through Friday.
Q: Who will my child's teacher be?
A: Your child will have an offsite teacher from CDLS or Ms. Campbell, a BUE teacher. Your child will receive grades and feedback from a CDLS teacher or Ms. Campbell.
Q. How do I log in to Online Learning?
A. Please watch this video, which will step you through how to log into to the CDLS learning system: VIDEO. If you would prefer to read about logging in, please see this helpful instructions sheet: How to log in.
Q: What school supplies will my child need for online learning?
A: You will need a computer, laptop, or Chromebook for online learning. BUE will provide a Chromebook. Some families may choose to use their own technology and this is just fine.
Q: Do online learners qualify for school lunches?
A: Yes. Online learners can receive lunches from BUE. We are setting up this process and will communicate how to pick up lunches by September 14. All online families will need to fill out the Free and Reduced application regardless of income as this ensures we can keep our FREE breakfast and lunch programs. This packet will be provided to you when you come to pick up your child's Chromebook.
Q. Are CDLS courses self-paced?
A. CDLS courses are NOT self-paced. Students will be working off a week-to-week schedule that their teacher will assign to them. Students will need to complete activities by the assigned due date. Failure to do so may result in losing points.
Q. What happens if my child misses a due date?
A. If a student misses a due date, their instructor may record a 'zero' for that assignment or activity. This informs BUE that your student is missing assignments or activities. Their teacher will reach out to offer encouragement and support. Students usually can still complete the missing assignments, so they should be sure to work with their instructor to submit them.
Q. Will attendance be taken?
A. As mentioned above, students are expected to login every day. Days where students do not login will be counted as absences. If a student logs in for only one course, it is a 1/2 day absence. If they do not log in for either math or literacy, it will be a full day absence. Repeated partial attendance or lack of attendance will require a meeting with Mrs. Clark or Mrs. Frees to discuss attendance during online learning.
Q. Are CDLS courses just videos?
A. CDLS courses are a combination of activities. Students must log in everyday and be careful not to fall behind. Students will complete activities and take tests similar to what they would do in a classroom. Also assignments have due dates and students may need help from parents to ensure they are getting their work turned in on time.
Q. Will my child see their CDLS teacher every day?
A. No. They will not see a teacher every day. However, they have access to their teacher or Mrs. Clark the site coordinator as needed. This fact sheet from CDLS helps explain communication for families: CDLS Elementary Strategies and Practices for Communication.
Q: I didn't see my question here, who do I ask?
A: Your teacher will be able to answer your questions. You are always welcome to call our office at (970) 285-5703. You are also always welcome to reach out to our school principal Mrs. Clark via email (aclark@garfield16.org) and she will get back to you as soon as possible.
